When Kristy Gaffney met Emmitt Dippold through an online dating service, she thought she had met the man of dreams. Gaffney, 29, alleges that when she first met her online date, he said his name was Ed Dupont, a divorced businessman. He also said he worked for the C.I.A. and was related to the wealthy Duponts.
After several dates, the relationship turned serious and Gaffney found herself pregnant. When she told Dippold, she says that he wanted her to get an abortion, but later reconsidered.
With the birth of their child, Dippold asked her to sign legal papers that would give him legal rights as the father. Not really understanding the seriousness of the papers, she signed anyway and the two began preparing Dippolds home for their life together as a family.
All went well until he did not return home with the child and told her that the papers she had signed were actually documents relinquishing her rights so that his wife, whom he had never divorced, could adopt the child.
Gaffney petitioned the courts and the judge ruled in her favor to overturn the adoption. Emmitt Dippold and his wife plan to appeal the court’s decision
