I can't help but notice that all of the rich countries in the world seem to have bad social lives/scenes. The rate of suicide by country income is the following...
Low income nations: 13.4
Lower middle income nations: 14.1
Upper middle income nations: 7.5
High income nations: 12.7
This would seem to indicate that life in upper middle income nations actually have the best balance of material prosperity and social prosperity.
Have rich countries actually become more prosperous then they can handle now? I used to think that being a "developed country" should be the goal of every nation but now I'm not so sure. I don't know if its worth it to be a materially prosperous country if it comes at the expense of destroying the country's social life. But then again, the US during the 1950s and 1960s was socially prosperous and materially prosperous right? So does that mean it can still be done? Or was the US at this time just riding on the coattails of an older, more humble society that quickly became increasingly spoiled and bratty after the 1960s?
Have Western Countries Reached a Point of Too Much Prosperity?
