Ya the US makes more money than anyone in history on the back of foreigners and even their citizens, immigrants using some crappy public services aren't the problem, something rednecks don't want to understand. Immigrants aren't the problem, the system was designed to collapse the middle-class and eventually lower the standard of living in the west, and raise the standard of living in the third world. This is the agenda of very powerful people and they decided on this plan decades ago. So you can cease trying to save America's economy, because it ain't gonna happen!

Let us remind ourselves that America has kept Latin America's standard of living down for many years by destroying any decent governments (usually under guise of fighting communism). In actuality most of these leaders conflicted with the interests of American corporations like Dole who benefited from banana republics they could rape for profit. Let us remind ourselves that America steals a f**k load of water from the Colorado River (on route to Mexico) just to supply and power (via Hoover Dam) Las Vegas the most unsustainable city on the planet (UAE cities notwithstanding). Let us remind ourselves that the southwest used to be Mexico's land.

NAFTA was the worst thing to happen not only to Mexico and Central America but Haiti. You have to do some reading to find this out of course, the media is mostly not telling you. We're talking about the ones who bring their families here, which is the majority of them. Plenty of Mexicans live in Los Angeles for 20 years and don't know a word of English. Same for Chinese in San Francisco Chinatown.

Most Latino immigrants know some English but don't speak it. There is a difference between knowing and speaking. My parents lived in the LA area for 40 years and don't speak English. One of the reasons, my mom told me is because she doesn't need to (especially in LA) and she's embarrassed of her accent.

They know, which I mean understand, some English. I don't know their grasp of English but they know enough to understand when I speak to my friends in English. An example of this is when I was in high school...

Me: A party tomorrow? Nice. I'm there...I won't tell my parents about it. I'll tell them I went to a friend's house to study...I'll see you tomorrow..bye"

*the next day*
Mom: Yo oí lo que le digistes a tu amiga. No vas a ir a ese party ...llava los platos" (English: I heard what you told your friend. You aren't going..go wash dishes)
Me: Si, mami (Yes, mom)

*a few hours later*
Mom: Este papel llego en el correo en ingles, me lo puedes traducir? (This paper came in the mail in English..can you translate it for me?)
Me: Ok (when I'm really thinking...WTF? )

Anyways..It seems Latino immigrants (and others) seem to find and/or seek places among their own for comfort. These folks tend to be older and/or poorer. The older folks can't learn languages as good as younger folks and the poor are too busy working minimum wage jobs to learn English. But the more educated, younger folks assimilate quicker..think of the Mexican immigrant laborer vs the Indian or Chinese immigrant working in the IT industry. The latter tends to assimilate more and quicker than the latter.

Many non-native English speakers are not comfortable talking to Americans. Which I found interesting as some Norwegian teenagers tried to apologize for their English when they speak better American English than a majority of Americans do.

The argument that the US has destroyed Latin America is often countered by the hush hush statement that Latinos are by nature lazy, corrupt and are not as business savvy. That they inherited the corrupt Spanish system vs the more progressive English one. That they do not live to work but just work to live.

As far as not wanting to assimilate, I think Americans have traditionally been prejudiced against anyone who was not English/Anglo Saxon- those were the only immigrants they accepted and liked. That prejudice is carried over through centuries. The Irish could speak English. So what? They were still treated like shit. If you look and speak/act Anglo Saxon, you are in even before you board the plane. Everyone else is a dumbass.
