Working overseas you need specialize skill set more so than working locally. Obviously speaking the foreign language helps if not that it's either having a higher degree like master in some sort of field that's relevant or have high IT skill set .

You are good at guessing and synthesizing information. Not giving any detail has only served to make people curious. I'll just say this. I have advanced degrees and I work in academia. My trip to Thailand is related to some of my administrative duties.

Is getting an advanced degree a pathway to working overseas? It can be. If you get a PhD in certain fields, you may be able to find a job at a university in another country. US academics can work in Europe, where the pay may be okay, or lower, depending on the field, though benefits may be higher. If you work in certain fields, you may be able to earn a decent degree in China. I'd imagine university jobs business, engineering, and certain other fields could pay well depending on the school. Not all Chinese universities pay well. Some of the decent-paying schools want PhD's who graduated from a highly ranked US university who preferrably already have publications. The ones that pay well will likely want someone who publishes a lot. South Korea also pays reasonably well for certain fields, but I've seen some real low-ball salaries advertized from there as well.

Malaysia also has schools and organizations that partner with foreign universities to open up foreign campuses. There are campuses of UK universities there.

So if you want to work in Asia, academia is a possibility.

I wouldn't recommend anyone get a PhD who didn't really want to study that field. For the sciences, social science, management, and many other fields, one needs to study Statistics in a PhD program. Most Poli-Sci PhD students need it, too, though there are some schools that allow students to not study statistics and use another approach. I don't think history and anthropology academics have to study statistics, or have to use it in their research, but most fields don't.

So I don't recommend a PhD for most people. Especially, if you get the masters first, it takes a really long time to finish, years when you probably won't have time to work on the side to earn a living for much of your time studying. If your data doesn't work out the way you'd planned or it takes you a while to arrive at an idea to add something new to the seemingly infinite literature in your field, you can take more than five years. If you transition into a PhD from another field and did not go to a top school in your field, you may need to have a masters. It might be possible to go directly to a PhD, but sometimes you'll end up in a lower ranked school, which shuts off a lot of the opportunities for jobs at higher ranked schools. PhD students often get four years of support in exchange for 20 hours a week of work. But it can be less than you need to live on.

A masters is pretty challenging to get as it is.

If you want to work abroad can you get a masters and be able to work abroad? There may be some niche where you could do that? Definitely you could in ESL, but you may not get a good return on your investment the way wages are in some countries. And you may not fair any better than someone with a bachelors. But some Asian countries allow ESL teachers in without any work experience.

An MBA is a good degree to have, but it can be hard to get a job overseas unless you have years of experience in a certain field? A lot of countries like to protect their own worker's jobs. So they may require an employer show evidence of having searched for qualified employees locally before recruiting from abroad, or they may require so many years of industry experience, five or ten, for example. That is my impression of how it is in East Asia these days. A lot of other people want those jobs. If you want to work in some poor African country, education and a white face might get you in without much experience. I don't know the job market. I remember in Indonesia, foreign companies were allowed to have so many foreign workers regardless of their qualifications.

There may also be some engineering niches where the skills is so much in demand that you could get the job. I remember several years ago an oil man telling me they always needed more mud techs, who made the 'mud' that kept the oil from spewing out of the ground like in the old movies. If you can find some niche in the oil industry, you may be able to go live on some oil rig on the ocean or in the middle of the jungle somewhere in a foreign country, spending some time in the city occasionally.

I think software engineering is still hot if you can actually write software. I'd imagine there is a place for such people in China, especially if they can speak Chinese fluently. There is a serious shortage of accounting PhD's. The last I heard, there were about five jobs for a newly minted accountant PhD from an accredited program (from a certain accreditation organization). An accountant with a Masters degree might be able to find a really good job overseas.

If you can get set up as an importer-exporter, you might be able to set up overseas. You could legally live in Hong Kong, make your money in China, and then not pay taxes in either country. Your home country may not have you pay taxes until you make well over $100K.

Another way to work overseas is to get a degree in education in some field that prepares you to be a teacher, get certified to teach in the US, then go work at an international school overseas. You may end up with a US salary, tickets home, housing, and get to live in a low-cost country. If you had a degree in something they don't teach in school, you might need two years of education to get the equivalent of a bachelors. If you have a degree in math or history, it might be easier to add the certification, and, then you have to student teach. I did see some Masters of Arts in teaching, a one year degree in a specific field that a state university had created to fill a demand for a teacher shortage in a certain field. You could do that, student teach, then work at an international school overseas.

Good expat jobs almost always require a lot of hard work. You may have to work really hard for years on your education. After you get the job, you have to work hard. You could put in 30 hours with prep as an ESL teacher and live okay as a single man overseas, probably. But it doesn't pay that much if you have a family. If you work in ESL and want to make decent money, you'd have to put in a lot of hours and work hard. Sitting around complaining about the lack of opportunities doesn't increase income the last I checked (not unless you combine it with voting democrat. )

I went to school way too long. But I have a decent expat job with perks like a van and driver (who works hours when I can hardly make use of his services), an apartment that has a jacuzzi, sauna, and fitness center and swimming pools. God has taken good care of me and my family.

If I were you, rather ask the locals you will be working with. Best times I had were when locals took me. In Argentina the people i worked with took me to places no gringos go. They put me up in a hotel only for naval admirals. In Mauritius they took me to a local bachelors party etc. Don't make plans. Ask your colleagues there what you can do.

But a ticket to good overseas jobs is specialising in a skill in demand. It requires work, intelligence and dedication, and always adapting to change so your career focus stays flexible. You have a monopoly for a while. Then you must develop something new. In the private sector no job is guaranteed so you must always stay ahead of the game. I have always been busy and booked long in advance. The rates are also very high, and since I charge the same as europeans, I get much more bang for the buck when paying for stuff in local currency. It allows for a far better life than i would have in the west with the same income.

If you listen to people on here you will do nothing as they have an excuse and forecast failure for everything. There was an axiom in the army: a bad decision is better than no decision. A man must take a decision in life. Sitting on your arse finding excuses to do nothing is no decision.

There will probably be some locals at the conference. But the ones putting it on aren't Thai. Thailand could be a central location. But there will probably be some locals there, and I could ask for some advice.

I met a missionary on an airplane once and had a long conversation with him and his wife. I sent him an email the last time I went to Thailand, probably a decade ago now, and he took me out to dinner. The food was good.

Does 'the west' include South Africa or Africa in general for you? I don't know where Africa fits into the East-West paradigm. I might consider Australia or NZ to be in 'the west' in terms of culture, but that doesn't make sense geographically.

I see a lot of posts on here about things being stacked against white men, usually in regard to dating and things of that nature. I have read many comments about the deck being stacked against men or white men in particular in regard to jobs. But I know of one poster who is really a strong proponent of that idea. I think a lot of the young men are open to some career advice.

You probably have a lot more good career advice to give. Do you know of any niches in engineering where a fresh grad or a fresh masters grade could fairly easily get a high paying expat job right out of grad school? Is there there a field where a man could get a degree and get a few years of experience and then get the expat job? Usually fields with shortages have shortages because a lot of people don't have the aptitude or desire to learn the skills. A lot of college students want to avoid advanced statistics courses, for example, after taking intro to stats.

If there aren't already, there should be some threads with career advice for specific fields that open up international opportunities, e.g. teaching jobs at international schools, engineering jobs, etc. I started a thread on majors to get jobs, but I don't think it was very popular. It does seem like complaining is more popular on this forum than getting information about how to find a decent career or develop within ones own career.

Snacks are an issue if you take them in the US. They have to be processed and sealed up. I'll find something. Curry pastes are good for people in the US, I suppose.
