Getting back to Argentina. I'm learning more about booking.com. Apparently, landlords discovered that tenants are attracted to big discounts, which is why they have these inflated daily prices and then give big discounts. Landlords also learned that Genius level customers (repeat Booking.com customer) reduces risk of really bad customers who are first time users of booking.com. So that 40% discount calculatuon worked correctly for me, but should not be relied on. Better approach is simply scan lots of apartments on booking.com together with other services to get an idea of market prices. Renting weekly serviced apartments (furnished, weekly towel/sheet changes and other cleaning) should cost about twice long term unfurnished rate, possibly more if especially nice furnishings. That rule of thumb should be true everywhere. For me, apartment is a big component of whether I enjoy life so I don't mind paying up. Anyway, $250/week works fine in Buenos Aires. I really liked the first apartment I was at so made a deal to return there. That was a cold drafty apartment in an ancient building with key that barely works, so suits my demented mind. Current apartment is in a brand new building, everything shiny and marble and mirrors: not for me. As for Voyager1, in case he's reading, they probably have $5/night flophouses somewhere in the city.

This is my first real world experience with an economy undergoing rapid inflation, and I'm starting to understand why prices are so high. The problem is that businesses can't easily update their prices, reprint menus or change the tags on items every single day, so they look ahead a few weeks. Sellers cannot just mark up cost because cost has already gone up by the time they sell. And it's a disaster if customers delay paying invoices. I would hate to be in business here.

Just since yesterday, exchange rate jump by 1%. Supposedly, peso is being held at its current rate by Argentine government buying pesos at that rate using dollars they borrowed from the IMF. What I normally do is test drive an apartment and landlord through booking.com for a week, then if I like the apartment and trust the landlord, I offer to pay by the week in cash (US $100 bills) for about 60% of the rate listed on booking.com. Booking.com charges 15% commission and weekly discount is typically 1 or 2 free days per week (14% or 28%, respectively) plus landlord avoids income tax and vacancies, so good deal for landlord if I stay multiple weeks. So for example, if rate listed at booking is $60/night, I would offer US$250/week, paid in advance for 2 weeks at a time (so 5 * US$100 bills). Current apartment has another tenant arriving tomorrow plus I want to test at least one more apartment/landlord, so I haven't made this type offer yet in Argentina, but I did in Ukraine, Moldova and Serbia with success. As it happens, booking.com is automatically giving me last minute 40% discounts anyway, perhaps because landlords set up some option for last minute discounts to avoid vacancies. There are cheaper and more expensive options, but US$250/week is a perfectly adequate budget for nice furnished apartments, especially if you are at Genius 3 level with booking.com (repeat customer with booking.com).

Frank stole that from my playbook. Book at hotel or apartment through Booking or Airbnb, stay a day or a week then negotiate directly with the owner or management for a long term stay.

I used this method to stay in a 4* hotel Suite incl. breakfast in Eastern Ukraine. I think at that time I was paying US$15/night all in. Except you don't have to get out brand new crispy US$100 bills as Frank implies, just good local currency will do.

No it doesn't, it means exactly as it implies, it's real, he knew her, she knew him, I have lots of real relationships with people outside the ones I have sex with.
