I think over time life 3rd tier China can really drive the handful of resident white English teachers mad if they don't take frequent long breaks in more international cities. Even if you have a balance and keep yourself busy, it's gotta be super stressful I reckon.

There used to be a poster here named Globetrotter who was in same situation - English teacher somewhere in the sticks of China. He started out ok but over the course of months and maybe a year or more, seemed to get angrier and more combative to point of self destructing, online anyway lol. I think in his area, most people spoke a dialect or group of dialects not part of the Mandarin group which caused him to give up on the language. Mandarin is gonna be more useful in Henan than wherever he was.

I was a colleague of his at the university he now works at, he came back from India in the second semester I was there. He was writing his book 'Expatriation Apocalypse!' and released it whilst I was there.

During this time, he kept himself to himself, we were always civil - he was always OK, I had no problems with him but he had history with some of the women I was friends with - so they told me about him - there was nothing serious but he was at the time chasing after a Canadian teacher who wasn't interested but Ghost tried hard to woo her - she liked me and offered me sex though I declined it, I don't know if Ghost got lucky in the rundown to her leaving, probably not - she didn't particularly find him attractive but she might have got desperate.

So in real life, I had no problems with him and he had no problems with anyone else apart from a young British teacher who argued about his views on Islam, he was mild mannered, dull, boring but harmless - he was pretty sane as expat teachers in Asia go - but then you read all his bullshite on here and then it makes you think.

I think living in third tier cities in China needs a total re-evaluation of what makes you happy, you need to be self reliant, what Ghost really needs is to go to a university where there are loads of expat, white, female teachers - some of the universities in the south have 30-50 foreign teachers and there will be one of them who will give him a desperation lay for sure. The majority of female teachers who live and work here are happy, but they are happy to go without sex - that is what I have found, so Ghost sniffs around them - in the west he would stand no chance with them and sometimes he gets lucky.

I like it here, but I know what it is though and what to expect from it. As long as I get left alone by management then I am happy as a pig in shite.

No, we were both in the city of Jiaozuo - quite a pleasant city for Henan. Latest reports suggest he is still there, I am not but I am in Henan.

About chinese universities, I am a reviewer for an academic engineering journal. Safe to say as reviewers are anonymous known only to editors so I am safe from any Yickery and am not short or obese I had to a review a chinese paper from a university. The english was shockingly bad, as well as the quality overall. I sent it back several times and I must say those chinamen took the comments to improve it each time and make it comprehensible but I still suggested they get a proper english language editor because it is not my job to rewrite the language. So whatever you guys do there you need to teach them to write english or I will go slant eyed trying to decipher what they are trying to say!

The English level of Chinese academics (working within China) is pretty low all round, even in the English linguistic departments, as you know, English is the international language of academia which is why a lot of Chinese universities are way down their own ranking systems and why a lot of their top academics go to the US/UK/Australia etc to gain their post graduate degrees and doctorates.

Most engineering degrees in China (outside their top universities) are not worth a candle, there are major cultural problems within Chinese academia in regards who passes, who fails, Confucianism and loss of face and if a student doesn't dedicate a paper to important figures within the university then they are at risk of failing - they have a long way to go before their universities can compete with the top places in the Anglosphere.

I'm not in academia. I'm in the private sector, but international level with the credibility to work international. Academia and government are no place for a white man in SA, especially me without a drop of liberal multiculti blood in my body . Our universities were once world class and had a lot of firsts, such as the first successful heart transplant. But are rapidly sinking to the coonosphere When they are open. Most are closed now due to violent rioting. They haven't sunk to selling degrees, yet, but certainly black students get degrees not worth the paper they are written on due to a quota system. To fail too many blacks means a racism charge and losing your job. I have seen this pressure direct, as I sometimes give guest speaker lectures for post grads. I refuse to bow as they don't employ me. Then they can find someone else if they just want rubber stamps.

It is part of what blacks call the african renaissance. Progress right back to the bush with everything built collapsing around them, with the only innovation being new forms of fraud, theft and corruption.
