CHILDREN as young as 12 are testing positive for sexually transmitted chlamydia, according to an Australian study that highlights hundreds of cases among girls aged under 16.

The study shows that children are vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), says lead author Carol El-Hayek, a speaker at the Australasian Sexual Health Conference in Darwin.

She and her team from the Burnet Institute studied data from 286,000 tests on people aged 12 to 24 from 2008 to 2010.

Around 10,300 tests were on girls aged 12 to 15, with 1338 testing positive.

Of these, Ms El-Hayek said 10 to 15 of the positive tests were from girls aged 12 and about 800 positive tests were from 15-year-olds.

She emphasises, however, that the figures do not reflect the infection rate among the general population.

It was not general screening - health workers would have requested the tests because of specific concerns about the individual girls, she said.

But the results highlight a risk among younger adolescents.

Research shows three in 10 Australians are sexually active before the age of 16, she says.

Other research presented at the conference shows chlamydia is rampant in Australia, with 82,707 cases diagnosed in 2012.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg," said Professor David Wilson from the Kirby Institute, which compiled the data.

He estimates one in 20 Australians aged of 15 to 24 have the infection, which can lead to infertility and other complications.

"Young people are definitely sexually active and at risk of STIs," Ms El-Hayek said.

"We need to encourage more testing. Doctors should become more comfortable about asking them about their sexual behaviour."

The only reason you screen girls that young is if you suspect they are being abused. Back in my ER days we would see this sort of shit all the time, 8 to 12 year olds with bruised thighs and other signs of sexual trauma that had supposedly gotten them all (along with a case of chlamidya) from falling down the stairs. There are girls that are active at 12, but the vast majority of transmitted diseases we see at that age are from sexual assault, to the point that it is assumed until other evidence presents itself. Good job calling the victims of kiddie diddlers sluts though, I'm sure you feel quite proud of yourselves.

I wasn't talking about 8-12 year olds, I was talking about 16 year old sluts. However, good point and I withdraw my rude statement above due to that. I know and have known many girls/women that had been victims of sexual assault. Years ago, I dated a girl that was abused for YEARS when she was a little girl. What is worse is that she was abused right in front of her mother. She wouldn't talk about specifics but if I touched her breasts, she would have a REAL panic attack (seizure-like). She was really into me and I could do anything but touch her breasts as that would give her flash-backs of years earlier....very sad. I felt so bad for her and I seriously doubt she is in a good place even now. Her life was wrecked due to her terrible childhood.

This is why I am against a large percentage of today's population having children. They aren't responsible themselves and should never take on the responsibility of a child. How many times have I heard about divorced mothers dating men that end up abusing their daughters....too many. What's worse is when the daughter tells the mother and the mother doesn't even believe her.

We are now talking about two different topics, but I think much of the blame for both can legitimately be placed on the heads of the parents in today's society as well as the media/entertainment on TV. Kids should not be having sex, should not be told that it's OK and definitely should not be forced to engage in it.
