Monday morning at dawn on the way home from the GF my bike just cutout. It would start again then die immediately. Fuel pump seized. So I started to push it home, and uphill. I passed a darkie on bicycle talking to a mate. he asked me did you run out of petrol? I said no, petrol pump seized. So he says let me help you sir. He Helped me for the last bit and by the time I got home I was knackered, especially after being 'winded' from the previous night time activity .

I only managed to trailer it to the dealer today and fuel pumps are on back order from the factory in austria until 2nd week of may, and dealer fully booked so he cant get to it until then as well. Bummer. My bike gone for 2 weeks. I mentioned it on a biker whatsapp group. Immediately I get a message from a guy in another town about 100 km away.He has a new fuel pump spare. I am welcome to take his and replace it when mine arrives.

Thankfully I have other bikes to ride. Life without a bike is no life at all. Even still, the thought of a bike being gone for 2 weeks puts me in mourning. It is my fastest one. 150 HP.

Every time when I have had bike problems some one has stopped to help. The last time a few years back the instrument panel kept shutting off and rebooting so I was afraid to shut off the bike until I got to a tar road in some town. It was sunday during christmas holidays. I detoured 50 km to a small town and asked at a garage if I can work on my bike there. They said fine.Sure enough the bike wouldn't start and all the electrics are dead. A young man on a bike stops, a local and said he will help. we took out the battery and regulator, blew all the dirt out and I was good to go but it was getting late. he said the next stretch of 60 km of dirt until the ferry crossing is empty and has no cell reception so if it dies again I will be stuck. He organised me a place to stay and said the local auto electrician is a friend of his and will check out the electrical for me the next morning. The electrician said the bike 100% so it must have only been mud and dirt on the contacts. He didn't even charge me.

In western countries I assume people would only stop you take advantage and charge you double.

Humans beings are put in some impossible position for them to act in a bad way with no other choice. If given a choice of reaching a goal with good or bad intention, humans will choose to do things the good way, but now the society is impossible for many humans to do anything by being good and fair.

My experience in America has been mostly that no one cares about things working. This is different from not helping. For example you can call up a company, get a nice sales rep and have them allegedly fix whatever problem you have. They'll read a script and address you as sir. After the phone call they'll even ask you to do a survey for rating their customer service. However the same problem they allegedly fixed will come back a week later and bite you in the ass. This is the same whether you're going to a mechanic or trying to fix a phone bill. So there is sort of a culture of polite incompetence here. It's more important to be polite than competent. No one takes ownership or sees anything as a personal commitment. It would actually be very rewarding for someone to openly screw me over by saying "look I have the upper hand, if you want to work to be done I'm going to take advantage of you and charge you double, but it will be done". This would be an improvement over the west because it's honest albeit brutal.

From your posts here my sense is that white South Africans aren't in a position to be incompetent. You whites are a small group and only getting smaller. The barbarians are at your gates and tomorrow they'll own the country. It makes sense to help other whites because you know that you will get help back. This isn't even because you like each other, it's just common sense.

Yeah- that didn't used to be like that in my Dad's generation, at least where he was from and the...culture he was taught. Irish Protestant or whatever, it had to be. I was taught to be exactly just as you said, down to a t. I was even raised an Eagle Scout. That's how our communities used to be, it was when people cared enough to take ownership and responsibility and had more personal connections. It comes with a more centralized planning of a community - which doesn't exist anymore...thanks to a larger centralization, which doesn't care about communities.
Only globalization. Quite sad really, but that's that.

Kradmelder: Good stuff! Might have something to do with you having a motorcycle- a car seems like shielding & like you're being greedy for conveniences. By the way: What bike(s) do you have? I'm looking into getting one & I want off-road ability combined with an ability to go cross-country while sitting upright. I'm thinking of maybe having a Harley converted to a semi-dirt bike (meaning it would mostly be a Harley, but I could handle things like curbs & driving it straight off the bed of a truck/van- you never know when that would come in handy or when you'd need to cut through some unpaved ground). I'm very new when it comes to bikes & I have a hard time finding things that explain it. Living in New York doesn't help, since everything's a pain in the ass & I don't live way upstate.

Speaking on the topic of people helping out & being sociable, I had a similar experience when I was in Hungary: I couldn't find the place I booked a room at & was having problems getting the internet to work on my phone (which was still pretty new to me). I couldn't call the place, since I didn't have internet to get the number & I booked it on Booking.com- not from the people at the actual place (so no "recently called" list). It was called Apartments4You. I wind up going to a place that HAS apartments, and people DO rent them out, but it's not a place that's like a hotel with a front desk to book rooms at.
So I'm wandering around, trying to find the right place, and I go into a gym because it was open (it was at night & there weren't a lot of people around or places that were open) & I asked the woman at the desk about it. She looks all kinds of stuff up, writes me things down, explains things to me, and tells me if I can't find the place I could just go straight down the Danube & I'll eventually run into one that probably wouldn't be that cheap, but it would be there.
So I'm walking around, I couldn't find the place, and I'm taking her advice to go down the Danube. I'm walking for a while & I run into these three guys that were speaking English with what sounded like a British accent (apparently, the British teach English in other countries like Americans do & people sometimes pick up that accent when they're speaking English). I ask them if there's a hotel up ahead & tell them my situation, then they offer to help me out. They walked with me for a good long while, in the cold, to help me find the place (we wind up at the same place) & then they book me a room at a hotel I didn't know about that was a bit further up. They walk me to the place & wait until I'm checked-in, I offer to give them some money for all the help they gave me & they turned it down (twice, actually), we exchange numbers & didn't wind up doing anything- but I was utterly floored by that. I told them I thought that this would NEVER happen in America.

We also had good conversation along the way, about a variety of things. I noticed the Hungarians are a pretty worldly people & it was a lucky thing I have some historical details & a philosophical ability or things would probably have been pretty dull. A conversation about mostly anything in detail is a rare thing in the US (in my experience) & it's rare that the subjects are on things that are more intangible (like cultural traits & historical situations having influence down the road). Oh- and no one freaked-out & accused someone of racism! I think it came up jokingly, but it was just that.
