Hiring and Overseas Virtual Assistant

I am thinking of hiring someone for one-off projects, maybe finding an Indonesian from friend or family networks over there. Minimum wage is low. Fresh college grades make a little over $300 a month, and plenty of people make $250 or less. I'm thinking maybe a college student who speaks some English. The work won't be writing in English, so that shouldn't be an issue. But with some of the translation tools, that might not even matter. So maybe I could hire someone for 10 or so hours a week. I'm trying to get someone to do some data-entry type work for an academic paper, maybe some video editing, etc.

Has anyone every done this?
