Iran had a leader with a title of president who just happened to die in a helicopter accident a while after Iran shot missiles at Israel which was the real first round of this open warfare.

A head of state should not talk about assassinating heads of state, IMO. It doesn't make sense.

And this guy is considered a Shi'i Islam religious leader. A large portion of Iraq is Shi'ite, and there are pockets of Shi'ites in other places. Shi'ites believe that 'Ali, Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law should have been made Calif either instead of Abu Bakr, Muhammad's best friend and father-in-law, and certainly after Abu Bakr's death, instead of going to other dynasties. And then they thought his descendants through Fatima, Muhammad's daughters, should have been made Calif at various times in history. They follow the teachings of 12 or so generations of Ali's descendants, who were the head of the Shi'i community. They have some different hadiths.

It's not quite like killing the pope to kill this guy, but it could have some ramifications beyond Iran.
