Expatriation: Leaving friends and family
Expatriation: Leaving friends and family
Hey guys. As you all know I'm just another American guy trying to find my way out of this country. I really want to be in Southern Spain or Mexico. Now, my question is, to all those who have officially become expats, how did you deal with leaving friends and family? The only person I really worry about leaving is my mother. I'm the only child and she is single. She already knows one of my goals is to move out of the country but I know this will affect her immensely. I am very close with my mother and knowing that I'm her only child and not being able see me on a regular basis will make her feel very lonely. So I'm curious to know if anyone was in a similar situation and how you dealt with leaving your loved ones.

I had this talk with my parents. I am also the only child. Yes, she is your mom and you love her, so do I with my mom. We have that perfect bond, but my parents are adults and so is your mom. This is why you should consider Mexico since you are still in North America. As long as she understands (I know she will) your stance on this country, she will support you. You can always come back and visit your mom.
I know I am not an expat, but I had this same thing come up in my life. I talk to my mom mainly about moving to another country. She understands it.
About friends...I don't have many friends that I would call true friends except a couple of people. I am not going to miss them at all. You will probably meet better friends on this forum and abroad.

Well telling my mother about leaving this country, is going to be that will suck for me eventually. She's a naive yet feminine woman who doesn't use the Internet, watch tv or read up on current events. So she's absolutely clueless on what I have deal for the future as a young man in this country.
She thinks that I'm going to finish school, get a job and work, buy a house, get married, have kids and the whole thing will just be all fine and dandy. Those are unrealistic expectations on me, because i'll never put myself in a position where I can get ass raped by an American woman. I rather stay single, then to be married to an American woman and be a slave to them. A misandric society where women will bitch about men till the end of humanity is not something I'm participating in. I'm awake and I see the freaking problem with relationships in this country. Once you sign that contract you're f***ed in every way possible. The same women who pleads to you to marry them are the same who cry to the judge in order to divorce you.
Women have all the benefits of monogamy, without the obligation of actually being monogamous and doing what she's supposed to be doing as a woman. I hope youll understand that one day mom

What I find amazing is the number of guys who can't accept what you've deduced from your own life experiences.well-informed wrote:Those are unrealistic expectations on me, because i'll never put myself in a position where I can get ass raped by an American woman. It's this tidbit which I can't quite comprehend. It's like the average man is like a lamb to a slaughterhouse. The blade is facing them but they opt for it, while convincing others, that it's a way to go.
Its tough!
Its real tough, especially if your far away in Europe (as opposed to a closer place like Canada or S. America). You will have to plan for visits back to the USA (which can be useful as you can get more of your property or do errands you need while visiting her). I expect she will try to put on a brave face, but will be very sad on the inside. I hope you will be OK as you will feel home-sick yourself. I got through, and never visited my mom for 3 years, but we weren't close, so it would be harder for you. You can always wait a while before going to "let her down easy," but now its a different world than when I left in 1999 - there were tons of jobs, a great economy then ... now its the pits.
