Re: What do I do with a 5k tax return check?
Shit, if I had that much money I would go to Rio, Philippines, or Ukraine and spend a couple of months R and R and not care about the troubles in the world...eurobrat wrote:Can't figure it out so many options. Please help me spend my tax return.
Rio is an absolute blast! It's a trip that must be made once in a lifetime just to say you've been there. Nowhere else like it in the world.
I used to book inexpensive apartments thru a guy named Kenn (American ex pat). Nice guy...cheaper than staying in a hotel. Here's his link: http://www.ez-riorentals.com/tourist-info.htm I'd recommend staying in Copacabana.

Put it in Roth IRA mutual fund with 50% going into an S&P 500 fund and 50% going into a Wilshire 4500 fund.
If that's not attractive to you, find a foreign bank that has CD rates above 10% and stash it there. I'm sure Ukraine has a few banks of that nature. Just remember you'd have to report the account to the US Treasury on an FBAR form, and you'd have to pay taxes on that interest. But that rate beats the long term US stock market average!

Which moderately safe foreign bank has CD rates at or above 10%? Which currency? Please tell.Contrarian Expatriate wrote:Put it in Roth IRA mutual fund with 50% going into an S&P 500 fund and 50% going into a Wilshire 4500 fund.

This is so out of my league, but with all due respect, the plan above does not make any sense. He will spend 1000 minimum just getting to Ukraine, then on top of that why should he trust a Ukrainian bank?Contrarian Expatriate wrote:Put it in Roth IRA mutual fund with 50% going into an S&P 500 fund and 50% going into a Wilshire 4500 fund.

I just don't see what's wrong with the tried and true plan of living frugal and putting money away in a savings account.

He could wire the money there, or he could simply wait until his next trip. Last time I traveled to Ukraine it costs $850 round trip.NorthAmericanguy wrote:This is so out of my league, but with all due respect, the plan above does not make any sense. Why trust a Ukrainian bank? Because banks in that part of the world now are better and more "trustworthy" than US banks and pay 10 to 12 times the interest that our banks pay. More sophisticated investors are taking advantage of foreign interest rates and to do so is to have your money far safer than in the US stock market.

Rio sounds fantastic but I do prefer Caucasian women over the Spanish women. Asian women would be second for me. Where can I go that women will be all over me and want to please me?
