A nice picture from 1958. Two Kiwi soldiers marrying Asian (Malayan women - probably of Chinese ethnicity) women.

The women look happy, very pretty and slim.

The guys look happy, very alpha male and fit and strong. Have times changed with this particular pairing in regards the men and the women. As you can see, these couples look happy and very well matched.

That is because in those days the men were men, and the women knew it. You didn't have the whining entitlement mindset thinking they are owed a living and they are above working hard. The men did their duty, for little pay, and expected to build a life, as did the women, not be handed one.

It would not have been easy for those women as well going to NZ with the attitude of white society at the time regarding asians. It would have been a big deal then for a white man to come home with a non-white wife. Only recently has it become more accepted. Sheep shagging would have been more accepted in NZ then, and still is I can imagine there would be brawls with the welsh and aussies over the sheep since women were not so easily slept with back then

Interesting point, it wasn't so easy in those days to bring foreign wives over and of course the culture shock and attitudes towards non-whites would have been really hard. New Zealand had a rather racist immigration policy in those days which made it hard to bring back Asian wives, so attitudes on the street would have been similar to South African in places like Australia and New Zealand, especially amongst whites of British descent.

Yeah, neither of the Kiwis look Pinetree Meads size, but they look respectable and fit. Which is more than can be said for most white blokes looking for wives in Asia these days.

On a kind of related note, a story about a British ex squaddie who was posted out when the CO found out about his engagement to a local Malaysian woman - this was 1968. According to the fella in question, the British Army didn't allow mixed race marriages then, sounds about right... the story has a happy ending as they were reunited 45 years later...
