In culture, African Americans dominate American culture. African-American culture, especially in the realms of music, dance, and fashion, is undeniably the source of much of American popular culture. In the 1950s, when African American musicians performing blues and rock produced music with widespread appeal, the majority of radio stations and record labels refused to play or produce their music. Instead, they sought white performers capable of producing the same sound. African American musicians influenced popular music, but not popular culture. Not any longer.
