Persons who visit the Fort Myers/Cape Coral metro area and choose to ride an e-bike will need to stay off Estero Island (Fort Myers Beach), Sanibel Island, and Captiva Island. That is correct, e-bikes or any bicycle with an electric motor on it are completely illegal on Estero, Sanibel, and Captiva Islands, they can not be ridden nor operated on neither street nor sidewalk, and they can not be operated on the beach, either. You get caught operating an e-bike, on street or sidewalk, on any of those islands, and it's up to 9 months in jail. Same with those bicycles that have that small gasoline powered motor as well. Only regular, non-motorized, pedal powered bicycles are permitted on Estero, Sanibel, and Captiva Islands, where a mandatory maximum speed limit of eight (8) miles per hour for bicycles is enforced.

On a side note as well, all bicycles, rollerskates, and skateboards are completely illegal in Downtown Fort Myers, on both streets and sidewalks, within the area bordered by Monroe Street on the west, Edwards Drive on the north, Fowler Street on the east, and Martin Luther King Blvd on the south.
