Much of antisemitism is rooted in jealousy. Successful people have always attracted naysayers who try to diminish their accomplishments in any way they can manage (they’re traitors and liars, they stole from others, they performed blood rituals, etc.). The Jews, as a whole, have long had the reputation of being well-educated and economically successful. That isn’t to say that all Jews are smart, or that all Jews are good people, but that a tradition of ambition and high education have allowed them to succeed in ways that few other groups have.

It belies the claim that religion is to blame for the world’s problems when one considers what the Nazis’ actually reason for persecuting the Jews was. Their rhetoric was not that the Jews were heathens for refusing to believe in Jesus Christ, but that they “betrayed” their country during the last World War, resulting in defeat. They claimed that the Jews were greedy bankers who robbed honest, hard-working Christians (and atheists) of their money. They owned too much land and too many profitable businesses. They had too many doctors and scholars and artists. In other words, they were too successful. All of these complaints surround money and power, not religion. And the resentment and envy that antisemites developed in response to this would eventually drive them to madness and atrocity.
