Rock wrote: 1. My ex and Falcon's cousin were the ones who cited Falcon's lack of confidence as an issue affecting his performance with Taiwan women. But I tend to agree. The critical nuance which you are missing is that 'confidence' means something different here than it does in all the literature out of the States and from the PU community that you love to hate on. First of all, it's simply having the balls to step-up when the opportunity emerges and not be all shaky and flustered.
I get what you're saying..

Confidence in Taiwan or NE asia simply means not giving off cues of being shy or too reserved. I know that if someone comes across as too shy or bashful that NE Asian women will consider that as being childish. They will giggle and be pleasant about it but it's not considered attractive at all. Whereas in the west being confident means being loud, boisterous, and a bit of an asshole to raise attraction level.
2. Falcon did lack confidence in front of the one Taiwan girl we talked to. He comes across as nervous and not sure of himself. When I had her warmed up and comfortable and dropped the "he would really like to get to know a girl like you line, why don't you exchange numbers", the girl gave a slight nod with her eyes and head but he missed it and hesitated for like a whole minute before finally connecting the dots and pulling out his phone. That does not make a good impression. Hesitating like that looks awkward.
It looks even worse because you had to prompt the exchange of numbers. This girl will subconsciously decide that he has no balls and had to be led by the hand by this foreign white dude even if she's too nice to say it. "Mei tsu shi"
3. So Falcon is rough around the edges and needs some work to do well here. But understand, if Falcon wanted to, he could date and even marry a Taipei girl of the same caliber as Julia. He would just have to put in the ramp-up effort. I think someone like his cousin could help him a lot with that. I could too. Odd that after so many years, he didn't seem interested in hanging out with his young and confident relative. I guess that guy just can't compete with Miss Indonesia.
I think he could too but he has a slumming mentality and is dealing with obvious personal demons on some level.

American rejection has scarred him and he's terrified of it. It's pretty apparent IMO.

Who told you that Japan captured Taiwan during WW2, and do you know what side the Taiwanese fought for in WW2?

remember that I have arguably fit into to Taiwan ok. Momopi probably would too.
That would depend on where in Taiwan. I did not fit in Taipei 30 years ago, or today. I dislike cities, high density populations, lack of "elbow room", and being too far away from water. i.e. Yilan is better suited than Taipei for me.

For me, women is not my top priority or my reason for living. If I can't even live with myself in a place, then I shouldn't drag someone else into my life. Only when I'm content or happy, then I'd consider taking a partner.

OK, I've just met up with "Rock's awesome Filipina" ( viewtopic.php?t=19314 ) in Manila today. Even though we'd be great friends, she says she knows she isn't my type, and she is right. She's what Rock would call a "classy, attractive, middle-class university-educated gal." I'm not exactly a smooth talker with her either. But later in the day, she saw how adventurous I was when I took her out to explore the chaotic streets of Manila.

I took Rock's Filipina friend onto the extremely crowded Manila MRT. It was so crowded that passengers were jammed pack like sardines and hardly had any room to move. About 5 trains passed before we could get onto one. We took more jeepneys and taxis too. Then I went into a church that neither of us belonged to and was open only to adherents, but I had the guts to walk in anyways and take a look. Interestingly, I got in without them asking me any questions, but she couldn't get in because she didn't have a skirt on.

==========

There's a difference between the superficial confidence you project and the confidence you feel on the inside.

1. Some people project a lot of superficial confidence (they can talk like convincing salesmen) or even swagger, but feel depressed, empty, and very unsure of themselves on the inside. This is often the case with celebrities. Or, salesmen who look extremely sure of themselves on the outside, but actually have absolutely no clue what the heck they're talking about.

2. Some people do not display a lot of superficial salesman-like confidence at first glance, but are very, very confident on the inside. Winston and I would be examples. Or Noam Chomsky, who's not a good public speaker in terms of the way he presents himself, but has true inner confidence and wisdom.

So, I'm not Mr. PUA who can talk like an infomercial salesman. But I have the guts and self-assurance to jump into unfamiliar territory, get to know new people, and go way out of comfort zones.

Superficial appearance of being shaky and nervous-looking with the sophisticated women of Los Angeles or Taipei? Well, it takes a lot of true inner confidence to go deep into very remote villages in rural Mexico and China completely by yourself, where the local cultures and languages are wildly different. And then staying with the folks there as if it's your hometown, and dating the village girls there. In rural villages, people see more deeply into people's true characters and don't focus as intensely on superficial personalities and looks as middle-class big-city folks do. It also takes a lot of self-conviction to go against the flow and do what you want to do in spite of everyone else's disapproval.

It's interesting how Winston defended me so strongly. Obviously, he sees himself in me, as if I'm his reincarnation in a different body. The two of us look very different from each other, but have very similar experiences and even viewpoints. We're both very freethinking and anti-mainstream types.

Winston and I pretty much agree about Taiwanese women. When Winston would complain about Taiwanese women, people would shame him for being an "Ah Beh" or overweight taxi-driving uncle and say that the problem is with him. But I can assure you that he isn't being completely subjective.

As a very young guy in shape who speaks completely fluent Mandarin but acts and thinks very differently from everyone else, local Taiwanese don't really know where to classify me. I'm neither a stereotypical ABC nor a typical Taiwan youth. Now even though I'm tall, thin, and athletic, with a completely different build than Winston's, my experiences tend to mirror Winston's. Russia was to Winston as Mexico was to me. And we've both personally experienced the same dramatic contrasts with the receptions we got from Taiwanese women vs. Filipina women, and Taiwanese women vs. Mainland Chinese women.

Rock wrote:I think someone like his cousin could help him a lot with that. I could too. Odd that after so many years, he didn't seem interested in hanging out with his young and confident relative. I guess that guy just can't compete with Miss Indonesia.
And yes Rock, my cousin does display that superficial confidence around Taipei women, whereas I don't. He'd be what Singaporeans call an "Ah Beng" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ah_Beng ) especially a few years ago when he had a sassier look, and his sister would be what they call an "Ah Lian" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ah_Lian ). :P

My cousins and I aren't on the same wavelength (as Winston would put it). Miss Indonesia and I could talk non-stop for hours and hours, about language, culture, traveling, family, religion, life experiences, deep thoughts, and so much more. On the other hand, my cousins and I just can't seem to talk that much. We do have quality conversations, but they just don't go on and on. Not surprisingly, they hardly say a word to the Indonesian lady either, which makes her feel very left out.

Interesting what you say about superficial confidence. I once worked with an ex army guy who appeared really confidence. But when tshtf in our turbulent industry he actually broke down and shed tears.

My date tonight (yeah another date!) guessed I was quite shy. On the other hand I was the first person in my entire family (maybe the whole family tree) to go to University. And I bluffed my way into the IT industry. And now here I am chalking up month after month of living in crazy places.

Nice story about the church. Back in 2008 I went in the Tokyo Stock exchange. Actually I'm not sure if they were open to visitors, especially given the market was down over 10% that day. I took a few photos then saw a sign saying no photos. Lol.

Anyway, glad you've tested the Manila metro - Rock told me it was grim. But then I went on a packed Bangkok bus tonight and took the risky standing position just beside the doors

I'm not sure about cold approaching. I kind of like the whole go on TLL and wait for date to arrive in shopping mall thing.

Anyway, tonight's date was 32, petite, an office lady, had braces, a tattoo (a first for me), brought a friend (grrr), had an amazing chest (yay), had a Samsung phone (yet again - iPhones are so 2011), wasn't from Issan but all in all a good girlfriend experience type of girl. Maybe an ex bargirl who's gone legit.

Wow, great adventures!

Xiongmao, I know you don't have superficial confidence, just like me. But do you feel confident on the inside? I get the feeling that you actually do. Just wanna confirm :D

Yes, pretty darned confident. I know I can stay abroad for a while. Maybe I'll go mad in Bangkok and have to leave. Well seeing two motorcycle accidents in a single night was a little crazy.

And the confidence with girls thing, well I find it all depends on whether the girl is my type. I find I kind of just can't be bothered if she's not my type.

Ah, I knew it! Actions speak louder than words. :D We both traveled solo in lots of places and met so many people, while out there all on our own. It takes a ton of true inner confidence to be a solo world adventurer.

Super sassy salesmen, celebrities, or jocks may in fact not be that confident at all. :P

Hey Falcon,

I'm not trying to give you a hard time in any way. If anything, I'm testing you to make sure you really wanna take this path when there are other options. For example, today I took the bus to NTU for a run. Sitting catty cornered from me was a 'repressed' Taiwanese couple engaging in a heavy make out and petting session. The girl was tall and very attractive in my book and I'm sure Winston would totally dig her too. So would you really prefer to be getting intimate with Miss Issan or Miss Indonesia instead of making some adjustments to be getting with the likes of this hottie instead?

Are you sure you won't one day regret not giving a full shot at dating certain attractive and classy urban Taipei gals? Just wanna make sure you really have your full confidence in this decision. If you know for sure what you like and want, fantastic. More power to you. I'm just making sure here.

Hey, I wanna join your 'inner confidence' club too. I've been all kinds of places solo. You guys should try going into barrios or favelas at night of Latin America or Carribean to enjoy real LatAm style partying. Visit Africa and see how strong you are when you get yellow fever or food poisoning from sampling the local street fare. Try downtown Port Au Prince during mid day when air is so acidic your eyes literally burn so you have to keep em closed with high risk of having all your stuff stripped on the spot. Or perhaps get stranded for a week in Dhaka with no luggage. If you wanna get adventurous in Phils, visit Cebu and take one of those crazy buses 5 hours into the provincial mountain area during a storm. Or perhaps go to Zamboanga. Sometimes the funnest, most exotic, least touristed areas are the more dangerous and/or inconvenient ones. I took some big risks going into the country side of Colombia but really had memorable experiences there. Wherever things are too safe/easy/clean/convenient/etc and have something interesting, hordes of tourists typically follow and spoil it. That's why you need to suffer inconvenience, high cost, and/or danger to find some of the most interesting HA experiences.

Here's the thing. The 'repressed' comment I made was sarcastic in case you missed it. If they behave like that on a Taipei bus, they're going against local sensibilities by making an awkward scene in clear public view; kinda like that dude who was getting a blowie on the MRT under his jacket by his gf recently (Youtube vid I posted here before) but not as extreme.

When u pull that kinda stuff around here, expect to be filmed. Locals film that kinda stuff all the time on the rare occasions they catch it. Those two are lucky I only snapped a couple of anonymous photos and posted here instead of actually videoing in a way which might reveal identities and posting on Youtube. No I don't feel like a dirty foreign voyeur. If you make a scene like that, don't cry about getting photoed and filmed nor blame the dirty foreigner. Chances are, Taiwanese are doing the same thing. Heck, there's even a Youtube of same lady eating a snack on the Taipei (or was it Kaoshiung) MRT. How dare she, lol?

Anyway, if you are gonna be rude enough to do that on bus seats which face each other, I may just be rude enough to film and post it. And I don't feel dirty or guilty about it. Sorry.

Yeah I was kidding. I don't care what they are doing or what you are doing to take pictures of it. People who do that in public don't bother me either though. I've seen more inappropriate stuff going on in the Bangkok BTS. I just don't care unless of course they are sitting right beside me and i'm trying to do something while they are getting blown or fingered.

So do you prefer Filipinas/Indonesians or Mainland Chinese women?

Filipinas/Indonesians are generally friendlier, but you can find very friendly (and interesting) Mainland Chinese women as well.

I did some moderately risky stuff in China. I did a lot of walking round the backest back streets of Guangzhou and saw really rundown looking places. I just wished I'd taken some photos. And of course being in China was a risk itself given I wasn't actually allowed to live where I lived. Lol.

Only time I got in trouble was when I walked into a restricted area. Lol. Good job I had my passport.

Got into a car with women I'd only just met a couple of times - one time I was pretty sure I was being abducted by a pink dressed femme fatale and her beefy driver. But they turned out to be legit.

But then again I grew up in one of England's roughest cities, and I've been all over London's roughest areas. When I lived in London even the tallest toughest looking guy in our office got mugged in Hackney.

Actually the most horrifying experience in China was getting the bill in Starbucks :(
