Nice trip report!
Which province are you in?
It sounds a lot different to Guangdong.
Guangdong is crawling with police.
Take care on the roads, it's carnage out there. And always look both ways when you're crossing the road. I've seen 15 accidents in China, the worst are usually out of town. Remember super-rich people don't need to stop at pedestrian crossings.
China is cheap but the quality of stuff is bad. I guess noodles are 50% tainted rice, 50% plasterboard. Carrefour was full of suspiciously gigantic vegetables, god knows what they were grown in!
If you want good stuff then it has to be imported, and then it ends up more than it would cost at home.
Are you there for a while? The Chinese Winter sucks.
Are you going to date some Chinese girls?

I was Happier Abroad for a while but Covid killed that off.

Why so negative on China? Your negativity on China drove Kai out of the forum. He was a really good poster, too...sigh...xiongmao wrote:Nice trip report!

Yes xiongmao, I gotta say you do seem like a rather fickle HAer. Like u were so excited about China for awhile and just as I was making plans to visit you this July in Guangzhou, you pop-up where I am in Bangkok. You're movements are as hard to track as Snowden's lol. And all of a sudden, China's the bad guy and Bangkok can do no wrong. Now after 3 weeks or so, you're struggling to get dates there and in your reports (or PMs) you are already mulling-over new options for finding better dating possibilities.zboy1 wrote:Why so negative on China? Guys, don't expect to fly-in to a new country and have it all fall into your lap unless you come equipped with strong local language skills, cultural understanding, and are quick at networking from zero. After the honeymoon period, you will have to put in months of hard work to start seeing any tangible results. To carve out a serious HA lifestyle in a given local, you will need to go the distance. Otherwise, you will just be a perpetual short term tourist and miss out on the deeper aspects - good and bad - of your target country and culture.
But I do admit, I would sure hate to be in northern China during late fall/early spring or winter. That's a good time to head down to Hainan Island!
Plenty of positives about China though. All the English teachers I met had a pretty decent lifestyle - not too much work, free apartments and plenty of opportunity for lucrative private tuition.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
I'm glad I went to Thailand to see what other Asian countries have to offer. And this place is brilliantly placed for visiting a whole load of other countries. I'll definitely pop over to see my Malaysian in-laws at some point.
If I return to China then it won't be to Guangzhou. I love that city but it's too much of a pressure cooker.
I suspect Falcon is my key to finding out where I need to go next, I hope he comes back here soon.
And Thailand is also a great place to get a CELTA/TESOL before heading to China for $$$.
Not taking responsibility for driving kai away though! Don't worry - he'll be back, most HA'ers come and go, especially if they have partners. Also HA is a pain in the ass to use in China, which is probably why he doesn't post much now.

Xiongmao is an ass, but he did not drive me away. My wife and I love laughing at his stupid posts, we sometimes read before bed. Keep em coming dude!
Congrats Ghost! I hope you met a nice lady or a few. Whether you end up like Xiongmao is up to you... "What you eat, doesn't make me shit." And the reverse applies as well.
I never said I would go away forever, but I have no desire to post everyday, every week, or every month, or year for that matter. I did remember that I wanted to see if Ghost wrote a report sometime soon. Looks like he had some good experiences so far, so that is a good thing.
Get a coat, some longjohns, thermal socks, and some stout gloves Ghost. If you don't you will be f***ed. That part of China gets cold as f**k. Really f***ing cold. I'm from Texas and that kind of cold was a tad nasty for me last winter. Unfortunately Chinese love those stupid looking "Cotton Padded Jackets" They are repulsive looking and do not keep you warm at all. 99% of Chinese think they look cool as hell. They never shook off the Back to the Future/1980s jacket look. Everyone in China wears them and think anyone not wearing one is not cool. I have seen some men with class wearing Lands End style nice ones, so maybe you can find some real jackets there. I brought my own, because I knew better.
Later guys

Yeah, HA is getting to be a pain in the ass to use from anywhere! Winston should spend some more bucks on hosting!
The Chinese Winter is fearsome, even Shanghai was too much for me and it wasn't even below 0°C. But the dry air made it feel much, much colder than the UK.
China did feel pretty safe, and I wandered all around the poorest neighbourhoods without any problems. Live there long enough and you'll see crime - especially in Guangzhou. I saw a deployment of armed police one night, obviously something big had just done down.
If you want to try dating then try WeChat - it's awesome. Put it on your mobile and you can find girls in your neighborhood. Assuming it works in China, I think it does. Met one Thai girl already using it, and got another two lined up. I might be able to find even more, but it only works in a 3Km radius so you gotta get out there.
I wouldn't live in China long term - too many health worries and I'd hate for my kids to be indoctrinated every day. Best thing is to find a Chinese gf and go live in Thailand or some place.
