...in Mexico?
In Europe, I know it's fine as long as you aren't actually causing any trouble like starting fights or vandalizing things.
In America, any drinking outside of private property is a crime. Even being intoxicated when entering the US from Canada or another country will get a person automatically arrested for "being intoxicated in public."
I am curious how things are in Mexico? Is it more like Europe or more like America with, say, bringing a bottle to a picnic date at a park with a girlfriend, and having some drinks?

Some states' drivers manuals declare that openly carrying alcohol on the road or on sidewalks is against the law. I don't think it matters whether you are in a vehicle or on foot. Roads are dangerous business so alcohol doesn't belong anywhere near traffic.
Parks and beaches are probably not legal either, but might be tolerated by officers who are actually cool. Because what exactly is wrong with drinking in the park or on the beach.
One time when I was drinking on the beach at night (in an area where I knew it wasn't legal) I tried to hide my beer behind my back as a police car came by, but the officer shouted, "Nobody cares! Just clean up after yourself." That was a cool police officer.
