"Living Grey?"

Hey, everyone. I was just wondering about "living grey," as I've heard it called. The idea isn't so much that you're an illegal immigrant, but that you came over there legally & you visa expired or something like that. I'm particularly curious about Europe, but information about anywhere is welcome information.

I ask with particular curiosity now, since I'm seeing that the illegal immigrants in Europe (at least the ones from the Middle East & Africa) are causing lots of problems. I'm wondering if an illegal immigrant comes off like that now, even if he's a white guy that looks mostly Italian & Slavic like he is. On the other hand, they seem to hand out a hell of a lot to these immigrants & was wondering if maybe my paperwork wasn't quite up to date it wouldn't matter? Especially if I am working & I'm not starting shit for everybody?

My main concern is that there's going to be a situation where I try to do something after the time limit elapses & this gets me locked-up when I try to get another visa or citizenship or something like that. While I'm there, I guess it wouldn't be much of an issue as long as I didn't get locked-up. When I try to go do things, I'm worried that's going to be an issue. Maybe it wouldn't have been, but it would be now?

I've got to imagine that someone on here has stayed past the time limit either accidentally or on purpose. What happens when you try to get a flight or a ship out of Europe? I'd imagine America would probably start shit with you even though it was some other country's laws- they don't seem to really have a problem with doing it for the asking or for no reason. Big part of why I'm looking to take off.

Not doing it deliberately, just wondering about if things don't go well. Actually, I'm still trying to get citizenship by heritage (tricker in practice than in principle). Most of the information has been gathered & it seems it can be translated at the embassey for about $100, but the thing is that appointments might not be available for a LONG time (months- and it might take a YEAR or TWO for everything to actually get done).

I guess I'm thinking about if I have to do a quick move without refugee status- although non-refugees don't see to have much problem, not that I approve of that. Also, it's unclear how much of a U there's going to be in the EU. Maybe I get citizenship from Italy, which gets me into the Czech Republic at first, then Italy or the Czech Republic isn't part of the EU anymore. Figure I might be in a situation where it's important.
