Quoting others

Post by Voyager1 »

If you are going to quote somebody in your post do not change any of their original text. If you see a spelling or grammatical error don't change it. If they have capitalized or decapitalized a particular name or word don't change it.

Misquoting others should be considered a bannable offense. At the bare minimum a warning should be issued on the account of those who would misquote another forum member.

Sorry, Voyager1, but this does not make sense, at least not for me.

It is a difference if somebody is quoting a part of a text from another member, sees some harmless typing mistakes and corrects them in the quote while typing his own comment

(remark: the original text is anyway unchanged and cannot be edited by other users)

OR

is editing, adding or deleting deliberately parts of the text to quote out of context and changing its meaning.

Clearly two different matters.

To quote is sometimes necessary, for example some members shortly after posting are deleting their comments or in case of long texts from others.
Later another person reading only the reply and cannot read the original missing comment anymore has no clue about for what this reply should be.

I think, this forum has an option which can block quoting totally for all members if you really want that. I don't know what Winston is thinking about it.
