Masai Mara is the largest reserve in Kenya and quite extraordinary. It has the wildebeest migration doing the summer, as well. But there are many other incredible parks: Tsavo East and West, Amboseli, the rhinos and pelicans at Lake Nakuru. As to not using a guide, I don't think I'd recommend that. A good guide is invaluable both for providing information as well as your comfort and safety. The price for a guide/tour company is not expensive. OTOH, many of the lodges are expensive, so that's where you can either spend more or less on your safari. I just got back from Kenya (my 2nd time) and love it.
