Tryptophan Pulled To Save Prozac

Post by Taco »

The amino acid Tryptophan was pulled off the market because it competed with the antidepressant Prozac. Tryptophan is found in turkey meat which is more evidence that a high protein diet is healthy for you.

Tryptophan is still widely available in the US market and in no way banned. It is good, harmless stuff that has potential as a nootropic substance in several capacities. If they weer to pull an antidepressant supplement, St. John's Wort would be a fat more likely candidate. It has been proven effective and is prescribed in the place of pharmaceutical antidepressants in Europe for many years. So I'm calling double B.S. on this one on the part of the writers.

The growing evidence is that carbs wreck your body in excess, I can definitely agree with you on that. Like, sugar should be labeled as cancer promoting, it is practically tumor fuel.

The availability (or not) of tryptophan would likely have had a negligible effect on Prozac sales. Sure, they might have seen a few thousand more patients, but in the grand scheme of things, that is nothing. It is similar to or ban on imported meat after mad cow disease- classic overreacting of bureaucrats that know their asses are on the line if even a single new case shows up on their watch. Few Americans with depression have even tried the supplements available to combat depression because slick pharmaceutical ads sell way better than bottles full of plants and oils.

Red yeast rice is a far better example of pharmaceutical companies targeting herbal medicine. On the one hand, I can see why they would pull it- the active ingredient is a statin that can and has killed people. I think statins are a massive scam that help in the short term but cause severe damage over time, and that Physicians should be more aggressive with lifestyle targeted efforts that are side effect free and have numerous benefits. But pulling a pill because it naturally contains a pharmaceutical substance is bad policy and deprives people of options. It us a tough line to draw, where danger outweighs access.
