What kind of exercise would be best for Winston?

I had a conversation with Winston on WhatsApp the other day about his need to exercise, to which he protested that he does get enough exercise walking, visiting museums, etc.

I then explained to him that he needs to do "proper exercise" in order to lose the pot belly, get in shape and look attractive for the ladies. Wanting to look out for a friend, I looked up gyms and martial arts schools in Chiayi.

What type of proper exercise do you think Winston should do?

1. Weight training

Excellent for posture, counteracts muscle loss typical of aging, and makes a man look primally masculine. Even many women are into it today.

Includes exercise routines that engage various components of fitness and can leave you dripping with sweat in just 15 minutes.

3. Kickboxing

Combines padwork, technique and sparring with intense circuit training. Far more fun than regular gym. Doesn't even feel like exercise.

4. Wrestling/Brazilian Jiujitsu

Winston thinks that Wrestling and Jiujitsu are "barbaric" (lol! :lol: ) but the athleticism of wrestlers is off the charts and even butt-scooting Jiujiteiros are usually in good shape.

Working out is a complete waste of time. Nobody cares about how many plates you lift, or how hard you work, and how good your diet is. The only thing that matters is genetics and that's face, height, skin quality, and frame.

Winston doesn't want to do it so all advice is futile BUT if I was to advise a middle aged, out of shape man into a workout programme that he could stick to. I wouldn't even suggest joining a gym or a club. I would advise investing in

a) some free weights and a bench

b) a good quality exercise bike or a stepper

c) a good quality rowing machine.

For home use.

In my apartment here in China, I have the free weights and rowing machine and a versaclimber and all I do is get up and go and do my workout in my undies which is very liberating :lol:

I would advise on starting on one set of weights and 3 minutes on the bike, rowing machine or stepper and then build it up a minute a time until he gets used to the exercise.

He needs to pay attention to diet which again, Winston isn't going to do that but he needs to up his protein to at least a gram point 2 per kilogram or thereabouts but he's middle aged and it's a good idea that he needs to get doing something to stop the quick slide into old age and its associated ailments - I don't think women come into it when you get to our age, you exercise to keep agile, fit and as strong as possible as you head into your sixties or seventies.

Yes, Winston definitely needs to look after his health now that he's in his 50s if he wants to avoid the quick slide into old age and remain relatively fit and agile. That's why I've been telling him to start kickboxing or lifting weights. You're also right that he needs to improve his diet since nutrition plays a vital role in exercise gains. I don't know what Winston's typical diet is like — I've only seen a few photos he sent me of the Chinese food he eats at home or in restaurants — but he should definitely spend some time researching proper dietary plans (easy with ChatGPT) and start eating primarily for nutrition rather than simply for pleasure.

In Winston's case, I think the ladies do factor in since Winston has recently been telling me how he wants to meet either a Chinese or New Age White woman in her 40s (at least he's being realistic in terms of age range). Needless to say, Winston would be considerably more attractive to such types of women as a physically fit 50 something year-old man who regularly works out and looks after his health than as a Winnie the Pooh lookalike pot-bellied couch potato, so I'm trying to get him to see reason and start focusing on his fitness.

As for what type of exercise Winston should do, I personally suggest Kickboxing because Winston likes martial arts (he did Karate and Taekwondo when he was a kid) and, with the exercises interspersed with padwork and learning of techniques, he will probably find it a lot more fun than regular fitness training and therefore remain motivated to keep it up.

When i was in my 20's, lifting weights over my head seemed to correlate with losing belly fat. In my 50's, lifting weights doesn't do much for that. It's good for strength. If you combine it with not eating carbs, you can lose belly fat or maintain your current status. I've eaten carbs roughly every other day recently. That seems good for maintaining, but not for weight loss. But my daily routine doesn't take me to the weight room. But my schedule should be lightening up now.

The diet is a massive thing for a man in his fifties which will make or break any exercise regime. I think he is a vegan/vegetarian so if he isn't getting the protein from his diet then it doesn't really matter what he does (which he has no intentions of doing) he complains about exercise 'makes him sweaty' I just don't think he is going to take up any of our suggestions on board.

I agree, if he wants to meet such women he needs to shape up. I was saying it on another thread, I can't eat the amount of food to build muscle these days. I am going to go for two meals a day (with one of them being a protein shake) from now on as anything more than that makes me lethargic both mentally and physically.

I've been trying to be consistent with weight training over the past year. It's hard to remain consistent with work obligations and all the rest of it. But I've made significant gains and look more muscular than i did just a year ago. The women love it. Just ask the girl who was biting her lip when she gave me a full body massage with a happy ending :lol:

This is the top pick! Kickboxing is extremely good fun, if you've got the stones for it. Sure, it involves getting punched in the face and someone's leg flying into your thigh or stomach like a baseball bat, but why have pleasure if you can't have a bit of pain? Aren't the two things just two opposites of the same value anyway? :lol:

My Take

Given the suggestions you've made, I would place each suggestion in the following hierarchy:

1. Kickboxing
2. Weight Training
3. Wrestling/Jujitsu
4. Crossfit
5. Zumba

My reasoning is that kickboxing, as you said is good fun and an excellent workout and simultaneously teaches you how to defend yourself. So obviously for me this is the top pick. Followed by weight training to build stamina and muscle and burn off all those takeaways. Wrestling and ju-jitsu is more technical and complicated, so this ranks third in my list because its still awesome. Crossfit is good, but weight training can help burn off fat just as well. And zumba is just f***ing gay.

But what do you think @Winston? We haven't heard your take on this.
