Is sleeping next to your cell phone bad for sleep?

Post by Winston »

Do any of you sleep next to your cell phone or smart phone? If so, do you notice any difference in how it affects the quality of your sleep?

I tried sleeping with my phone near me a few nights and also tried sleeping without the phone nearby or turned off, and noticed that when I sleep near my smart phone while it's on, my sleep quality suffers. I get nightmares, feel anxiety and wake up groggy and with a bit of a headache, as though the sleep process was interfered with. But when the phone isn't around or turned off, I slept much better and more normal without interference.

Is there a reason for this? Or is it just a placebo effect?

Have any of you tried both ways and experienced any difference?

What about the wifi in my home? Should I turn it off during sleep too? But even if I do, the neighbors' wifi from multiple houses still runs through the house. What can you do about that? Wear a tin foil hate or radiation protector blanket?

Check out this article in the Huffington Post. Apparently, a lot of people sleep with their smart phone under their pillow, which affects their sleep in that it causes them to get less sleep and have lower quality sleep as well.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/1 ... 80805.html

According to this, 90 percent of young people sleep with their cell phone near their beds:

http://ansonalex.com/infographics/effec ... fographic/
Effects of Sleeping Next to Your Cell Phone Infographic Highlights:

Over 75% of people the United States are connected to the internet via a mobile device.

33% of smartphone owners would rather give up sex than their smartphones.

95% of survey respondents claim that they use a technological device (smartphone, laptop, television, etc) in the hour before they go to bed.

90% of 18 to 29 year olds sleep with their phone right next to their bed.

1 in 10 survey respondents claim that they are awakened a few times a week by their cell phones.

50% of those that sleep with their phones next to them claim that the they check their phone when awaking the middle of the night.

63% of respondents that use gadgets right before bed claim that their sleep needs were not met.

A two-hour exposure to light from electronic displays suppresses melatonin (a sleep promoting chemical) by 22%.

Late night computer use is associated with sleeping disorders, stress and depressive symptoms.
The last two items above are revealing. I didn't know that using the computer at night before you go to sleep affects sleep negatively and makes it hard for you to fall asleep because it suppresses melatonin. No wonder why I have trouble sleeping after using the computer at night. I thought it was due to insomnia.

I use my laptop up until I go to bed. I sleep fine :)

My mobile stays on a bookshelf. I don't have that habit of carrying it around or sleeping with it.

Not exactly what you asked, but a Cellphone emits a lot of radiation if in contact with your body. A few feet away makes a big difference. (Proven.)

So I always take mine out of my pocket when I sit down, lay it down where I can reach it.

Bluetooth is so weak (short-range) that using it actually reduces radiation exposure from cellphone use. Better to use bluetooth so cell is not right by your brain. Best of all is an old-fashioned hardwire headset or mike for your cellphone.

From a common sense standpoint, wifi has got to be stronger than bluetooth radiation, but weaker than cell.

Worst of all, from a common-sense standpoint, would be the satellite-based internet that some expats use in remote locations. Radiation has to be strong enough to reach up to space.

Some people are more sensitive to things than others. if you think you are affected, you probably are. Experiment and find out.

I believe that presence of wifi broadcast in the same room is going to much more powerful, and disturbing, than having the device located a couple of rooms away. Best of all would be to switch it off and use hardwire, but then you are tied to sitting in one place.

BTW I think FES Essentials has a Flower Remedy that is appropriate for people with this sensitivity.

People go to sleep without turning their cell phones off? Why?

Mostly young people do that. They are addicted to their smart phones and don't want to miss any messages. So they leave it on and check it all the time when they are awake until they fall asleep. This means that they put it near their bed or under their pillow for convenience.

Some probably like to text in bed. And some use their smart phone as an alarm clock so they need to have it in the same room.

I definitely have trouble sleeping when the cell phone is near me. And even when I fall asleep, it's a light sleep with bad dreams. Not what I'd call quality sleep.

Jester, should I turn off my wifi router every night? I heard they are meant to be left on 24/7, is that right? What's wrong with turning it off? There is no off button on it for some reason, so I'd have to flip the power button on the outlet adapter to turn it off.

I asked the cable guy about this, he said just unplug it, and plug in hardwire (bypassing the wifi).

Haven't done it yet. No doubt you can turn it OFF by UNplugging, the question is will you be able to get it to COME BACK ON. Better not try it afternoon of July 3, or a Friday afternoon, when no help is available.

My guess though is you won't need any help.

Bottom line: yes, turn cell and wifi OFF completely, plus put cellphone in another room, just in case it is being polled for its location by the celltower via some kind of passive RFID type response. I know they CAN turn this feature on, but don't know if it IS normally on. Plus they seem to beep sometimes when they are off, but get a call. In other words, even when off they are alive.

Similar issue with any passport, electronic key, or security badge with embedded RFID. They don't emit, but respond if something hits them. (I believe.) So I keep my Mexican border card wrapped in double aluminum foil inside my wallet. I just don't know what type of fields trigger RFID response. Other people's cell calls? TV station in town? Who knows? Supposedly the RFID must be very close to the transmitter, with the right frequency... but who knows? As you say there are overlapping wifi fields, and lots of other frequencies all around us all the time. So why not reduce the possible sources?

Also AT LEAST "power off" your VCR/DVD if it's in your bedroom. Better yet to get it out of the bedroom, I don't know how much field they make when powered off, but they are still a box with a coil of wire inside that is plugged into the wall.

Even power cords can act as antennas, so the less electrical wires plugged into wall the better.

I think turning off and unplugging the surge protector from the wall at night would be a great easy step.

But again to recap most important stuff is:

(1) MOST of the gain will come from turning cellphone off, and
(2) turning computer off. so there is no overnight updating this-or-that antivirus or whatever going on while you sleep.
(3) Make sure noone ELSE is using internet in the next room while you sleep -- I notice an effect if it's like within 50 feet, but nothing at 100 feet. If someone is USING wifi there is a lot of radiation going back and forth.

and the less important stuff is:

(4) Turn your Wifi off if possible.
(5) Unplug electric devices in bedroom if convenient

and if you are picky like a zen monastery then you could also:

(6) Put cellphone and RFID items like passport etc into a double foil-wrapped cigar box when going to bed
(7) Reduce number of electric devices you keep in your room.

Don't forget to bring in fresh air.

And exercise!

I think germanguy is probably the latest incarnation of wufan. He joined a couple days after the previous incarnation, theprimebait, last posted. At least he's off of his male model fetish now, and just going in for general ball busting. May well be a woman. But in any case, a troll is a troll.
