It is important for you to know that I am a registered Democrat and, to my knowledge, share none of the political views espoused by Duke. However, whether he is ill disposed or healthy, John Wayne is far beyond the normal political sharp shooting in this community. Because of his courage, his dignity, his integrity, and because of his talents as an actor, his strength as a leader, his warmth as a human being throughout his illustrious career, he is entitled to a unique spot in our hearts and minds. In this industry, we often judge people, sometimes unfairly, by asking whether they have paid their dues. John Wayne has paid his dues over and over, and I'm proud to consider him a friend and am very much in favor of my Government recognizing in some important fashion the contribution that Mr. Wayne has made.

His first two wives were Mexican, the third was Peruvian.
You may not agree with his politics, but you always knew where he stood, called a spade a spade, never compromised his principles and was loyal to his friends.

I heard he was a very honest and fair in his business dealings. He even chose to lose money rather than defraud someone when he could have gotten away with it.

I understand he was a socialist for only a small time, but I found that interesting. He seemed rather honest and upstanding, but it is interesting how he morphed from socialist to conservative (although it is not without precedence, where socialist become the total opposites on the right, see David Horowitz and Irving Krystal). But the main point was how he dated mostly foreigners.

The science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein was another who began as an extreme liberal / socialist and converted to a ultra conservative / libertarian in his latter years.
Ronald Reagan is another example. He was a Franklin Roosevelt Democrat during the 1930s and by 1964 was a firm supporter of Barry Goldwater and the Conservative movement. By the way, John Wayne politically supported both Barry Goldwater (1964 Presidential bid) and Ronald Reagan (1966 California Governor bid).
Don't see many people who go the other way from Conservative in their early years to full-blown Liberal in their latter years.....at least I'm not aware of any.
I guess I find the socialist to neocon especially interesting, but there have been some others that were interesting and actually were more libertarian, like the guy who was editor for Reader's Digest in the 40's, who gave favorable press to FA Hayek.. Otherwise it seemed it was more prominent with neocons. But yeah, disagreed with John Wayne, but seemed like a gem. Just interested me with his foreign women and his early years.
Reagan was eh (seemed liberal, and although he was pro abortion, which I am mixed about, he increased taxes, so not as keen on the gipper).
Goldwater was good on domestic policy, but foreign policy was eh, otherwise good, and would rank him above Milton Friedman on quasi libertarians (Milton was bad on monetary theory).

Wow check out this movie called Brannigan from 1975 where John Wayne plays an American cop in London, similar to Dirty Harry. I didn't know John Wayne made a Dirty Harry type of movie before too. I wonder why this isn't as famous as DIrty Harry. It looks pretty good. See the trailer below.

Just saw the John Wayne film above. Wow he's so blunt, no-nonsense, and honest. Very masculine too. No bull. How come men in America aren't like that today? lol
