Just out of pure curiosity I was wondering what the prevalence of online dating is accross various countries and whether it varies between cultures that are open vs. closed. I suspect that in countries such as the US and UK where people tend to be cliquey and where opportunities to meet new people are severely restricted, that online dating would be bigger than in countries such as Spain, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Thailand etc. I know that in some countries such as Russia, they have a surplus of women and that could play a part in their preference for online dating.
What I was wondering was whether there is an increasing amount of men in western countries meeting their parters through the internet purely because of lack of opportunity, e.g. relying on friends, being in the right clique, innappropriate to meet people in public etc. I say this because I feel that lack of opportunity to meet new people in western countries is possibly one of the biggest barriers to dating in western countries such as the US and UK.
I wonder what the prevelance is of people who meet their partners through online dating by country. Could this be an indicator of how socially open a culture is?
Is online dating bigger in closed, cliquey countries?
