Interesting article in the Guardian about whether one can have a romantic love relationship with a prostitute and whether her feelings for you can be real or not. Keep in mind that in the UK prostitution is legal so this is a legitimate issue, not a taboo one like in the US.

What do you think? Is it possible to make a prostitute or bar girl into your girlfriend? I heard it's possible but unlikely and not a good idea and a recipe for disaster and disappointment. Because like vampires, they've sold their souls and lost their innocence. Any of you tried it before?

Prostitution is sex in exchange for material benefits. This is, technically, what every woman, indeed every female mammal on the planet does. The problem with prostitution is that, when done for a long time and/or with coercion or violence on the side, it ruins the woman's ability to recognise good men from bad ones, bond with them, trust them and give themselves to them.

On one side of the spectrum, you have your cute "college student" who loves a life of designer clothes, surprise trips to Dubai and New York and fine dining. A prostitute by any other name. Assuming there's no coercion or violence, those women will be bent out of shape forever. They will never be able to genuinely bond with a man, let alone love him. Years of transactional sex makes everything look a transaction. All they have in their emotional and relational arsenal is a hammer and everything will look like a nail to them.

On the other side you have those women who are forced, or force themselves, to have sex for money. Those women will quickly develop a thick skin, with very high self-defense mechanisms learned the hard way to protect themselves and maximise their (often meager) benefit. Those women are also bent out of shape. They will not trust a man, they will not trust a man's heart or their own. They might pretend to give themselves to you, but always emotionally keeping at distance and always with the eye on the prize.

The question is not between prostitutes or non-prostitutes. It's about women with a f***ed-up soul and women with less of a f***ed-up soul.

Before Voyager1 butts in (uninvited as usual), note that publicduende removed the word "love" from OP's title question. And when you remove that word, the answer is unquestionably Yes., because you can absolutely have a relationship with a prostitute. Namely, a transactional client-service provider relationship. I currently have a client-service provider relationship with a professional tango stage dancer here in Buenos Aires, with a amazing ballerina body that almost no prostitute would have, in addition to a beautiful face. Our relationship is confined to practice dancing tango together 3 hours (with occasional rests) once weekly. If you know anything about tango, the degree of physical closeness is similar to that of sex. But our relationship is purely professional, not even a hint of real sex or love. I had to double the rate she normally charges because I was embarrassed at the quality of what she's providing versus her original rate.

Yes, and there are men who prefer exactly such women because we also have a thick skin and self-defense mechanisms and don't trust women and keep them emotionally at a distance. Like attracts like.

I'm not so sure about "bent out of shape", which sounds like a moral judgment. From an evolutionary point of view, thick skinned people like me and certain prostitutes (such as that Ukrainian girl I used to see) currently probably have fewer children than average, but then there are also thin skinned people nowadays with no children. In days of old, when all children were valuable as workers and retirement plan and sons were valuable as a private army, thick skinned people might have been the most fecund, and pumped out as many children as possible, then exploited these children ruthlessly. So it's not clear that thick skinned is an evolutionary failure. Nature has a place for all sorts of life forms.

That's a good point. America is the hardest country in the world to get sex. Or even a normal date. So why does prostitution have to be illegal there? That's a double whammy. More people should talk about this. But it's taboo to say that. Because getting sex isn't supposed to be something you want. lol. Weird. Btw Canada used to have legal brothels, but that has changed I heard. America does have escort services that are legal loopholes for prostitution. But they suck because you can't even see the woman before she shows up.
