Of all the East Asian nationalities, I have the least amount of experience with Japanese girls. I approached them (tourists) in Europe a few times and always got shot-down. Scored once in Ropongi but she turned out to be a Chinese girl. The closest I ever got was with one in Taipei (expat) and another in Saigon (tourist) but both times, I could not follow through because I was with other girls.

Generally, my subjective (based on very limited experience) impression is that they are pickier. The ones who are into foreigners have a specific type in mind. Just being white or black is not enough for these sub-cultures.

One of my white (Jewish) American friends had a cushy expat job Tokyo for 3 years and had previously lived there another 5 so he spoke fluent Japanese. He's 6'1", slim, decent looking, and was early 30s during the posting. I have a few Taiwanese friends married to Japanese girls here in the US. Based on personal observation only, I'd say it helps if you are: 1) US citizen, 2) speaks Japanese, and 3) date Japanese girls here for college & wants to stay in the US (read: hunting for husband before student VISA expires).

Be warned that she would expect to be a stay at home mom and raise 2 kids. I've seen this like, 3 times in a row. On the plus side, Japanese in-law's are more generous with their financial contributions, versus Chinese in-law's would expect you to give them money.

The mistake (for better or worse) that I made in the past, is that I dated exchange students with no intent of staying. Thus, the relationships never lasted after they return home.

As for lonely sexless men in Japan, if they're otaku, it's a matter of personal choice (2-D anime girls over real life person). If it's because of socio-economic reasons, then they cannot afford the many girls in the water trade (mizu shobai) & adult services avail in Japan (i.e. $30 for a BJ at a pink salon). I've read that many of the girls who are hardest into foreigners will go down to Okinawa to hook-up with American GIs. And there are even segregated hang-outs. One disco is mainly for the whities and another for the black guys, not out of racism but just to make the pick-ups more straight forward. The groupies who want a black guy go to the black disco and the ones who are OK with whites go there. Can anyone who has been to Okinawa confirm or refute this?

Its also supposedly common knowledge in much of Asia that Japanese girls often go down to SE Asia (places like Bali) to hook-up with the local guy(s) of their choice. Many even provide compensation or at least cover all the expenses.

Here is my experience. I am a Black guy. Lived there in japan for two years. it was MEGA EASY getting a date. i love their character too, very charismatic majority of them are friendly. i was getting approached by them in mcdonalds. Every time i went to the same one. All the japanese women working there would run to the counter and say hi to me with a big smile on their face. In roppongi i approached one in public. she was very friendly, sweet and talked to me.

winston was absolutely right about how easy it is getting a date outside the US. Im Black so it was very easy doing this. even at work ( i was military at the time 2005-2007) the japanese would see me and shout out my name, " HI watkins" ( my last name ). they did this everytime they saw me in the office.

now it is 2010. i am here in the U.S. california, los Angeles. I go to the little tokyo to see them. they are not approachable in public here in america. the environment changes them really fast. BUT here is the thing... when i go into the shops where these women work. i talk to the japanese ladies. and they are so FRIENDLY and OPEN to talking with me. but when i talk to an american women when she is working. they don't want me too. they hate when you come up and talk to them and they want you away from them. they are very narcissistic even behind the counter. rude bitches.

My experience has been similar to SSJParris, in Japan at least. As a black guy I always had ti easy there. But it IS ture that there is a certain type who are into black guys. It's not as small a subculture as one might think though. Those that aren't will probably make it clear pretty quickly. I remember back in the day, when karaoke clubs were open (not the private boxes) and I would sing Japanese songs in there, girls would literally grab me, as I tried to walk back to my table, so they could talk. Of course, this is where alcohol is involved.

I had similar experience in Korea. It seems those girls who are into hop hop and black guys will go out of their way to let you know it, and the rest will pretty much ignore you.

A childhood friend of mine is a U.S. marine and was stationed in Okinawa. He was a pretty decent looking Jewish guy and pretty outspoken. He hated Okinawa and said that the people were really tired of the military in general. The women available were usually party girl types who spent their time sleeping from GI to GI. The respectable nice girls pretty much kept their distance.

Btw, Japanese guys have no problems scoring in Thailand. They have entire blocks set up in Little Tokyo style and a Japanese guy tends to set up with second wives in Bangkok. I used to live in a condo building which was a hive of Japanese expat activity and some of the women they had were absolutely hot. I really don't think they are exactly starved for attention here. Yes, if you skim through a lot of the posts, I think we're establishing that different guys will get vastly different experiences in a given country.

Race, age, appearance, and personality all factor into the equation. And just because many people in a country may behave with prejudice against certain races (say Korea against blacks) does not mean that women in that country will not be attracted to men of that race. Japan is known as being very xenophobic and generally biased against all non-ethnic Japanese. But the black guys on this forum all seem to do very well with women there.

I'm guessing that certain places are the common denominator - where you will be accepted and get action no matter what your race, age, looks, or personality. Could Phils, more specifically Angeles be once such place?

Well, you are an ethnic Chinese. I've heard that Japanese perceive Chinese and Koreans as 'inferior' (possibly a colonialist attitude stemming from partial or complete occupation of those territories before and during the early 20th century). Chinese and Koreans do not like Japanese much either, due to atrocities committed by Imperial Japan in both places (the Nanjing Massacre was probably the most disturbing of these, IMO).

I've not been to Japan, so I have no real idea as to how they perceive whites. Some (like NiceGuy) are very positive in their outlook towards Japanese women, whereas others are more guarded. I am similar to NiceGuy in many ways (raised in a middle-class family and with good manners - which does NOT get you anywhere in Anglo societies) but different in others (Asperger's Syndrome). Whilst I wouldn't want to be an East Asian with Asperger's Syndrome, I have heard that they don't mind too much if you're a foreigner with AS.
