I am not a fan of Bill Maher, but he has won considerable points with me in this video. Pay attention the part at 3:00 in particular referring to how he was able to buy a portion of the New York Mets!

He has no wife and no hookers, so he probably has a lifestyle most men here wouldn't want.

I don't know the stats, but my guess is that men are at higher financial risk of being drained financially through child support than through alimony. And a man who knocks a girlfriend up can end up paying alimony. He may have to pay it even if the child is not his if the state targets him and he gets in the system.

I agree. For all the shit alimony gets, most states have reduced the amount/length of alimony that's awarded. Lifetime alimony is largely a thing of the past except in a few states and extreme situations - for example, a couple in their 60s divorces and the woman was a housewife who never worked & has no chance of earning any real money going forward. Alimony as well as asset division is largely negotiable and it helps to be on amicable terms, avoiding lawyers if possible.

Child support is almost almost determined by a formula. Plug in a couple of numbers (income, % custody, etc.) and BOOM that's your monthly child support payment every month. No exceptions. It can be re-evaluated and increased if your income jumps and your ex takes you to court.

I am not a fan of Maher either but he does make some excellent points in this video.
