This is a clear violation of the 2nd Amendment- Right to bear arms. Because if the government can ban one type of weapon, they can soon move to take ban the importation of all guns. The only way to get around this ban is for the makers of the AK-47s is to set up factories inside the U.S. (just as foreign car manufacturers Toyota, Honda, BMW, and many others) to make the rifles.

There have been several small firearms manufacturers that make an American version of the AK-47. In order to avoid import regulations all the parts are made in the US and assembled here as well. The federal government has no respect for the 2nd Amendment and fears average citizens who are armed. Our politicians know that in order to establish an even more authoritarian central government the 2nd Amendment must be attacked. This is why Obama takes advantage of tragedies like Sandy Hook. Our current "leaders" are attempting to provide us "security" by violating the Constitution, the end result will either be a Second American Revolution or an oligarchy in which the elite tell the rest of us what to do. Top-down social engineering has been in progress for decades now. This fact is evident because we now have an entire generation of "adults" who know little about the Constitution and even less about history. If the Founding Fathers were alive today they would likely rebel against the corrupt degenerates in both parties that have nearly ruined a once great nation.

The Second Amendment does not prohibit the government from restricting import of firearms from specific countries. However if anyone is really obsessed with getting an AK, feel free to go buy a Saiga 7.62x39 while supplies last. For those who don't know, Saiga is the "sportsman" version of the AK. They're cheaper than Ruger Mini-30's and can be found even in pawn shops for $600 and up. Though I suspect the prices will go up now.

After the supply of new Saigas run out, if you still want to buy 7.62x39 semi-auto rifle, you can still get the Ruger Mini-30 for about $900, or old Chinese Norinco SKS for $300 and up. The import ban actually helps domestic industry, but good luck getting the government to lift the import ban in future. WARNING: 7.62 round will over-penetrate and may not be suitable for home defense!!!

For the budget conscious, Mosin Nagants rifles (7.62x54) are avail from $120 and up. If you're looking for an inexpensive survival deer rifle, this is a lot cheaper than an AK. But seriously, don't expect to survive long-term by hunting in SHTF scenario, there simply isn't enough deer.

You're probably thinking of steel-core ammo, those who served in the military can correct me if I'm wrong. Er, don't bring these to outdoor range with iron targets, they will damage the targets and make the range master very very upset at you.

IMO there are too many nutty people who spend way too much money on firearms and munition, but little to nothing on food and water. If they're preparing for SHTF scenario and think they can run to the mountains and survive, I'd point out that we only have about 30-40 million white tail deer and less than half a million California mule deer in this country. During the great depression, wild game was quickly and severely depopulated. Also, firing something that loud will attract attention, that is, other heavily armed folks who'd want a piece of what you have.

For $1,000 you can buy several months worth of emergency food, water storage containers, a shotgun, and case of 250 shotgun shells. If you shop carefully, you might have enough $ left over for an air rifle and several tins of pellets (250-500 per tin), which is good for small game. There are many "quiet" air rifles that won't attract as much attention.

But personally I wasn't worried about surviving.

After all, I'm already abroad. So any questions I have are clearly theoretical.

So survival planning is not the issue here. I was actually just interested in being equipped to make sure that a bad guy or two DOESN'T survive.

How to survive if the SHTF? One method you didn't mention: kill a Turkish soldier, then steal his money and rations. That's what my grandfather used to do, after the Genocide, anyway. Worked for him.

Yes, I know that certain kinds of ammo are not for target ranges in lovely Costa Mesa. Some kinds of ammo are for bad guys in body armor. The arrogant kind who get big salaries working for "contractors". That's why I asked.

Actually, the higher velocity rounds might fragment on impact with the various parts of the structure. There's also different types of ammo (hollow points & MagSafe, for instance). Frangible rounds are another idea. There's a lot of bullshit about "public dangers" with guns & I think it's really just to use people's conscience against them for whatever cause they're aiming at. Armed populations are hard to kick around- the equipment facilitates counteractive endeavors.

...or, for the cost of the SKS ($350), I could get a Mosin Nagant ($120-$150) and crate with 880 rounds of ammo ($200).

I'd rather put the money saved toward long-term storage food and other supplies. Weapons and munitions are important, but it's just one part of the stash. Having experienced LA Riots, I can also say that when SHTF, you can expect the cops to run away on day 1.
