Lt Gen Igor Kirillov killed along with his deputy after device attached to escooter exploded

Killing of Russian general cements SBU’s reputation for abrupt vengeance

A senior Russian general has died after an explosive device hidden in an electric scooter detonated outside an apartment building in Moscow, in an attack claimed by Ukraine that marks one of the boldest targeted assassinations of a senior military official since Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country.

Lt Gen Igor Kirillov, the head of the military’s chemical, biological and radiological weapons unit, was killed along with his assistant when the blast went off as the two men left a building in a residential area in south-east Moscow on Tuesday.

A source in Ukraine’s SBU security service said Kyiv was behind the attack.

Kirillov, who was placed under sanctions by Britain in October over the alleged use of chemical weapons in Ukraine, is the most senior Russian military official to be killed in an assassination away from the frontlines since the start of the Kremlin’s offensive in Ukraine nearly three years ago.

Zelensky claims North Korean missile used in devastating Kyiv attack which left 12 people dead and dozens injured contained 'American components'

Updated: 26 April 2025

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed the North Korean missile used to destroy part of Kyiv in a devastating overnight attack that left 12 dead and dozens injured contained American components.

Russia attacked Kyiv with an hourslong barrage of missiles and drones on Wednesday night in its deadliest assault on the Ukrainian capital since last July, just as peace efforts are coming to a head.

After Zelensky initially revealed the attack had been carried out with a North Korean missile, he took to Telegram today to accuse American companies of supplying components for the offensive weapon.

The missile that killed the people of Kyiv contained at least 116 components imported from other countries, and most of them, unfortunately, were manufactured by American companies'....

Russia's top general has confirmed for the first time that North Korean troops have been fighting in Russia's war against Ukraine as he held talks with President Vladimir Putin.

Valery Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, made the confirmation of the North Korean troop deployment in a videoconference with Putin on Saturday, noting the North Korean troops had played a crucial role in the liberation of the Kursk border region.

"I want to point out the participation of servicemen from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the liberation of the Kursk Region's border areas, who, in accordance with the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between our countries, provided significant assistance in defeating the invading group of the Ukrainian armed forces," Gerasimov said in a transcript of the videoconference posted on the website of the Kremlin, referring to the North by its official name.

"Soldiers and officers of the Korean People's Army, carrying out combat missions shoulder to shoulder with Russian servicemen, displayed high professionalism, fortitude, courage and heroism in repulsing the Ukrainian invasion."

It marks the first acknowledgement of the North Korean troop deployment by a Russian official. North Korea has yet to confirm the dispatch.

North Korea is estimated to have sent about 14,000 troops to fight in the war since last October in support of Moscow's aggression, including some 3,000 reinforcements this year, according to South Korean officials.

Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed the partnership treaty at their June summit last year, in which they committed to providing military support "without delay" in the event either of them comes under attack.

US says it will no longer mediate in Russia-Ukraine peace talks
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/us ... r-AA1E33mV
The day before the announcement, Trump approved his administration's first arms export to Kyiv.

He informed Congress that he would approve exporting at least $50million (£38million) in arms to Ukraine.
I think Trump realized that putin was "tapping" him along and not serious about ending the war which is what I said.

Oh yeah Trump got his minerals deal. "We want your minerals. Give us your minerals."

About the mineral deal, better give what is still available to USA and not to Russia.
About Trump, he also seems slowly to understand that Russia does not care about him at all.

As you know I am from Europe, living in Japan, and both - Europe and Japan - are not a Russian friendly region due to very bad experience with Russia (and the former Soviet Union) in the past.

EU considers Russia to be a threat, no friendly relationship possible. There is deep mistrust whatever any agreement in future with Russia might be, as it will likely be broken.

The way to go for EU and Japan is to invest more into own defense and to assist Ukraine as much as possible - with the exception however not to send combat soldiers.

Ukrainians will have to fight it out by themselves, but they can count that they will be strongly supported by EU with all what they need - even without assistance from USA.

Ukraine needs help of any kind to survive - weapons, ammunition, food, medical supplies, vehicles, fuel... and why not?

Russia is also looking for help from Iran and North Korea - why should Ukraine not receive assistance from other countries?

For sure, the Russian 3-days military special operation more than 3 years ago was a total failure, Ukraine still does exist.

If you ask me, the war will continue, for how long I have no idea. It can go on still for a very long time...

Wow Bill O'Reilly says that Putin is a pure sociopath and doesn't respect anybody. Is that true @Yohan? If so, why do his own people like him so much? Is it because the Russian people are sociopaths too? I noticed in Russia that no one would apologize to save a friendship. They are super stubborn and obstinate and proud of it.

putin: "Hope I won't need to use nuclear weapons"
https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/pu ... r-AA1E8DI7

If putin says "Hope I won't need to use nuclear weapons" that means he is planning to use them. Probably small tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield where he can't advance. I think @Tsar predicted that nuclear weapons would be used this year

This shall be interesting.
The Ukrainian President warns Russia that he doesn't guarantee the safety of the 9th of May parade in Moscow. He advised against travelling to Russia on these dates: "It will be your personal decision."

So much about the 3-days special military operation.... LOL
Russia accused Mr Zelensky of threatening the security of its commemorations. Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called this “a direct threat”.
Somebody told me on this HappierAbroad Forum, that Ukraine has already lost the war? Is this really true?

After more than 3 years war it seems Ukraine with help from supportive EU-countries has its defense strategy significantly improved.

Of course, it is still not enough what EU is producing related to weapons, but the situation becomes 'organized' - somehow daily routine and Ukrainian soldiers are getting more and more used to how to defend their country. Drones made in Iran, soldiers sent from North Korea, Russian tanks, airplanes und warships... so far Russia failed to remove Ukraine from the map.

Ukrainian attack on Moscow forces Putin to cancel VE Day parade in Crimea
Tue, May 6, 2025

Ukraine fired drones at Moscow days before Vladimir Putin was set to host world leaders at a Victory Day parade through the capital.

Russia was forced to cancel Second World War anniversary events in occupied Crimea because of security concerns.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, has said he cannot guarantee the safety of delegates attending the march through Moscow on Friday, which will be attended by Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader.
-----

It came as Ukrainian forces launched a second incursion into the Russian region of Kursk, breaking across the border and destroying bridges.

On Monday Kyiv fired dozens of drones at Russia with Moscow’s mayor reporting four intercepted near the city. The attack temporarily disrupted air travel at Domodedovo airport for about one and a half hours.

-----

The Victory Day parade is scheduled to begin at 12pm GMT (10am Moscow time) and last for two hours.

There is speculation that North Korean troops might take part and questions remain about which world leaders will attend.

-------

In the occupied Crimea region, Russia has cancelled its planned Victory Day military parade in Sevastopol, with governor Mikhail Razvozhayev citing safety concerns.

It follows a Ukrainian sea drone strike that destroyed a Russian Su-30 fighter jet near Novorossiysk on May 2.

The $50 million (£37.6 million) aircraft reportedly crashed into the sea, Ukraine’s military intelligence described it as the first time a sea drone had downed a jet.
