The mercury has hit 36.7C at Heathrow to make today the hottest July day on record, according to the Met Office. It comes as Britain struggles to cope with a heatwave that has seen calls to paramedics in London up by nearly a third and transport networks beset by problems.
The previous July record of 36.5C (98F) was set on July 19 2006 in Wisley, Surrey.
