The short-term is always unpredictable, but the Japanese yen will die before the US dollar, so the dollar is fairly safe for now.

I heard one respected analyst say that the dollar is going to go up for at least another year. It basically has to do with divergence of policies of the central banks. Japan is printing more money and Europe lowered its interest rates and is close to a recession as well as China. The gold and silver nuts are getting crushed. Even some hedge funds didn't see it coming are are suffering record loses.

People like Taco have been predicting a collapse of USD is right around the corner (weeks to months out) for many years now on this forum. That kind of talk is silly and detracts a lot from his credibility. If something like that ever does happen, it will take most everyone by surprise. He imagines he's in the know cus he watches some off-the-wall Youtube videos. That's delusional.

The USD index last sharply appreciated in 2009. It was the result of rapid unwinding of leveraged risk assets (carry trade investments, etc) in the face of crashes in stock markets, real estate markets, and higher yielding currencies and bonds. Assets were liquidated and the capital flowed into USD, Japanese Yen, and US Treasuries, all of which appreciated rapidly through most of 2009.

But life got back to normal by 2010 and the USD continued its decade plus long secular trend downward erasing all of its gains.

Currently, a catalyst for USD having another upward correction I think is the slowdown of QE and speculation that it will eventually be discontinued with continued (on paper) US economic recovery. So yes, the USD has been strengthening modestly against many currencies and dramatically against certain other more volatile ones. It's also appreciated a lot against Japanese Yen which has fallen against most all currencies in last few months.

Going forward, my sentiment is that USD will not start a multi-year bull market against other currencies, commodities, and precious metals unless there is an extraordinary event such as some sort of crisis or crash. Why? It really seems to be in the US government's best interest to weaken the dollar over time, just as the Fed has been effectively doing for last 12 years. As long as USD does not collapse to quickly causing a widespread panic sell-off and it's fall from reserve currency status, weakening dollar generally means - lowing of real value of our foreign debt, strengthening of stock market indexes in nominal terms, and increased export competitiveness.

I do hope the USD strengthens a lot more this year against most Asian/higher volatility carry trade/commodity/ and/or emerging market currencies, precious metals, and commodities. For me personally, I would get a net benefit from a strengthening USD this year.

Its obvious none of "experts" can agree on a timeline for economic turmoil in the US to begin but that's not my fault. The fact is the US is borrowing 8 trillion dollars a year and they can't pay it back.

The last time I checked the US Dollar Index has been going down for the last 30 years.

Taco I really appreciate what you do for us here. The $ was designed to implode from the go but it has to be by script by the people who invented it. I have a feeling some of the lower mob bosses have other ideas and the top tier does not like them wanting to go another direction. This could be WW3 in my book.
