Rogue Russian soldiers capture second village in two days

Russian troops fighting for Ukraine have captured their second village in two days, the soldiers reported.

The Siberian Battalion, a pro-Kyiv militia, claims to have raised its flag in the village of Kozinka, Belgorod, together with the Russian Volunteer Corps.

The groups posted an image of them holding up their flags on Telegram, captioned: “Flags of the Siberian battalion and RDK in the village of Kozinka of the Russian Federation.”

The announcement comes after two separate volunteer groups yesterday announced they had raised their flag in Gorkovskii, 16 miles to the east.

The battalions form part of a coalition of volunteer forces who have taken part in cross-border raids on Ukraine’s eastern front over the past week, capturing prisoners and settlements in Belgorod and Kursk.

Moldovan president launches campaign to promote EU referendum

President Maia Sandu launched a campaign to promote an upcoming referendum on Moldova's push to join the European Union on Monday, calling on civil leaders to rally support for the country's accession to the 27-member bloc.

Moldova, a former Soviet republic of 2.6 million led by a pro-European government, applied for EU membership in 2022 and received a draft framework for accession negotiations in March, along with neighbouring Ukraine.

The country's relations with Russia have become strained since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which Chisinau has staunchly condemned.

Sandu announced plans in December to hold a referendum later this year on whether to join the EU. The president, who will seek a second term at elections in late 2024, told a news conference that Moldova had a historic opportunity to mount an accession push.

The referendum would vote on enshrining Moldova's EU ambitions in the constitution ensuring that the bid is not derailed by future governments.

"Member states of the European Union are more open than ever, we have the necessary political will for this step, and our citizens want to be part of the EU," she said.

The referendum would prevent Moldova's pro-Europe drive stalling or reversing after a change of power, she said.

"This must be reconfirmed and written in the Constitution, so that whoever is in government, the voice of the people for this direction of development should be mandatory for the political class."

The referendum could take place in October, she said, though parliament would choose the date. It was not yet clear whether the constitutional court would allow the referendum to fall on the same day as the presidential elections.

Ukrainian bombardment of the southern Russian city of Belgorod and surrounding areas has forced the evacuation of up to 9,000 children from the region that borders Ukraine, authorities said.

The decision to remove the children from the danger to other regions of the Russian Federation was taken at a meeting Tuesday of the presidium of the General Council of United Russia after shelling this week killed 16 people and injured 98, said regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.

A barrage on Tuesday injured three people including a child, according to the governor.

The first batch of more than a thousand children are due to depart Friday for safer areas hundreds of miles away to the north and northeast in central Russia and the Volga.

"We are resettling a large number of villages and plan to remove about nine thousand children from Belgorod, Belgorodsky district, Shebekinsky district and Grayvoronsky district. On March 22, 1,200 children are going to Penza, Tambov and Kaluga," Gladkov said.

He said that arrangements were in place for the next group of children to be sent to the Stavropol region of southern Russia, 640 miles away in the Caucasus, but did not state when the evacuation would get underway.

The move comes after orders for shopping centers in Belgorod city to close Sunday and Monday were extended to schools with students ordered to stay home Monday and Tuesday.

So far I do not see any major city in Ukraine occupied by the Russians...about the same as a few months ago.

About 80 percent of the Ukrainian territory is still controlled by Ukraine, Russia failed to occupy Ukraine and to remove its government since more than 2 years. I would consider the present situation as a stalemate. One step forward somewhere and one step backward somewhere....one time the Russians are doing better, another time the Ukrainians are doing better (for example to remove Russian warships in the Black Sea and to keep Odesa port open)

For the moment I can only say Ukraine is waiting it out, money is coming and more weapons and ammunition will also be delivered soon to Ukraine.

Maybe within one year or so we will know more. Now all is only speculation... I don't know how it will continue.

March 20 (Reuters) - Ukraine received on Wednesday a first 4.5 billion euro ($4.88 billion) tranche from a European Union bridging finance programme, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said.

As the war with Russia enters its third year, Ukraine critically depends on financial aid from its Western partners but foreign financing dwindled in the first two months of this year.

"This strengthens our economic and financial stability," Shmyhal said in a post on the social media platform X.

Ukraine spends most of its own revenues to finance its defence efforts and uses the funds from its Western allies to pay public sector wages and pensions to millions of people and to support other social spending.

Last month the EU approved a four-year 50 billion euro ($54.20 billion) financing programme to Ukraine.

I am in Japan, not in Europe, on the other side of Russia...

Russia is the only country in this world without a peace contract with Japan, and North Korea, its little bestfriend has not even any form of diplomatic connection with Japan. Both are terrible neighbours.

However to threaten Japan is not so easy - Japan is located on islands, the Japanese military is considered to be fairly strong especially the Navy, and there are about 55.000 US-troops as backup.

I do not think that EU countries will send troops to Ukraine, for what? Ukraine always said, it wants to fight it out by its own people but help in form of weapons, ammunition, medical supply, refugees etc. is really important to kick the Russians out of Ukraine.

Some EU countries, likely also France, will send some EU-troops to other EU countries which share a border with Russia, like the small Baltic countries and Finland.

These EU troops will likely help to prepare to transfer weapons, ammunition and other military related materials over the border to Ukraine, maybe also to Moldova...just my guess. There should be soon deliveries from EU-factories ready for the Ukraine military.

There is also some serious work to do to fortify the EU-border to Russia.
