Few people know, and many, including on Reddit, are ignorant of the fact. E-bikes are totally illegal in the State of Illinois, as enforced by the Illinois State Police.
Under Illinois State Law, no person shall be in possession of any bicycle or scooter that contains an electric motor, a battery, or both, within the State of Illinois, and no person shall operate any motorized bicycle or scooter upon any street, alleyway, trail, parking lot, backroad, or sidewalk within the State of Illinois. All violations are investigated by the Illinois State Police and carry a penalty of up to ten (10) years in prison.
Only non-motorized bicycles are legal in Illinois, and Illinois enforces a statewide speed limit of eight (8) mph for all bicycles.
And Reddit blocks all warnings of Illinois laws, including the illegality of e-bikes in Illinois, because once again, Reddit is headquartered in Pyongyang, North Korea.

Here is a quote from Illinois state law:
" (b) Each low-speed electric bicycle operating in this State shall comply with equipment and manufacturing requirements adopted by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission under 16 CFR 1512. Each Class 3 low-speed electric bicycle shall be equipped with a speedometer that displays the speed the bicycle is traveling in miles per hour."

Federal law requires all bicycles within the United States of America, motorized or not, to have lights for riding at night. White light on the front and red light on the back.MrMan wrote: ↑June 5th, 2024, 1:04 pmThat would outlaw headlights at night.traveller wrote: ↑June 4th, 2024, 10:21 amFew people know, and many, including on Reddit, are ignorant of the fact. The federal government has power over interstate commerce and therefore may have some laws related to 'interstate' highways. But on local roads, state and local governments regulate lights on bicycles.
