When the Mormons were getting killed in Illinois and/or Missouri, they made a decision to high-tail it to the uninhabited West. The result is they control one state of their own and influence at least two more, doing very well, still multiplying, thank you very much. (One ran for President in 2008.)
When the Chinese Commies got their butts kicked by the Chinese Nationalists, they crossed China (the "Long March") into a remote area where their hordes of soldiers could seize power and dominate the locals. They holed up, licked their wounds, then re-launched the war when they were ready. The result is they conquered all of China, and their sons now rule China.
In the board game of "Risk", the best place to seize, then hole up and build strength, is almost always the mini-continent of "Australia". There is only one entrance you have to defend, and because it is located in a remote corner of the gameboard, noone is ever "just passing through". If you are in trouble elsewhere on the gameboard, sometimes you can take "Australia" and start over there.
That's pretty much why I came to Baja. An easy one-day drive from Los Angeles, but out from under the spiritually eviscerating "SkyNet" of American culture.
