Mr. Watson obviously isn't suffering--it isn't as if he needs to money to pay rent or buy food....Auctioneer Christie’s said the gold medal, the first Nobel Prize to be sold by a living recipient, could fetch as much as $3.5m (£2.23m) when it is auctioned in New York on Thursday. The reserve price is $2.5m.
Mr Watson told the Financial Times he had become an “unperson” after he “was outed as believing in IQ” in 2007 and said he would like to use money from the sale to buy a David Hockney painting....

Re: Watson impoverished for stating the obvious
By the way, from what I understand, even the Nazis have gone PC. You can no longer refer to Poles, Russians and other non-Aryan Whites (except for Jews) as untermenschen. They have the same status as German Aryans now, even though everyone knows (or should know) that Slavs are nowhere near as smart, intellectually-advanced and good-looking as Aryans. Communism fell apart because it was all controlled by Russians. It was the intelligent and highly-advanced Aryans of East Germany that kept the Communist economies going as long as they did. Without the East Germans, the Eastern Block would have crumbled a lot sooner than it did. Now, the European Union is completely dependent upon Germany (and other Germanic countries). Without them, all of Europe would be in the gutter right now.

If you want the truth to win, then you have to be willing to give it all up.Cornfed wrote:As stated, they wouldn't have to do that if they were to present a united front against evil. It is logically not possible for the whole industry to be blacklisted at the same time.Gadfly wrote:You seem to be more optimistic about people than I am. Unless they're willing to give up their wealth, status, reputation, friends, comfort, security, and even family, probably most "real scientists" are cowards who will choose self-preservation over truth.
If you have to reassure them that they wouldn't have to give up their comfort, security, etc., then you've already lost. They would still be cowards anyway, and this united front of yours wouldn't stand a chance.

Then he's not as sympathetic as he's made out to be. He obviously craves his former wealth, and seeks to reclaim it. He certainly doesn't inspire his fellow colleagues to speak the truth, or form a united front against evil.pandabear wrote:Mr. They would have to be brave enough to risk having to give it all up, but if it weren't for universal cowardice the risk would not be 100%.Gadfly wrote:If you want the truth to win, then you have to be willing to give it all up.

Thanks I needed that

And how exactly can they be brave enough?Cornfed wrote: They would have to be brave enough to risk having to give it all up,
You said: "it is only their own cowardice that makes it seem that way [i.e. makes them perceive that they will get similar rough treatment]."
So if it's "only" their cowardice, how do they get rid of it?
No one has disputed that. The point is, as long as they have too much to lose, you should expect most of them to be cowards who will choose to stay silent rather than be loyal to a friend or to the truth.but if it weren't for universal cowardice the risk would not be 100%.

Here is a happy ending to the story, where a rich guy buys Watson's medal for a large sum and then gives it back.
