Many Americans have no friends of another race: poll

Post by zboy1 »

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/ ... 4320130808
(Reuters) - About 40 percent of white Americans and about 25 percent of non-white Americans are surrounded exclusively by friends of their own race, according to an ongoing Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The figures highlight how segregated the United States remains in the wake of a debate on race sparked by last month's acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting of unarmed black Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. President Barack Obama weighed in after the verdict, calling for Americans to do some "soul searching" on whether they harbor racial prejudice.

There are regions and groups where mixing with people of other races is more common, especially in the Hispanic community where only a tenth do not have friends of a different race. About half of Hispanics who have a spouse or partner are in a relationship with non-Hispanics, compared to one tenth of whites and blacks in relationships.

Looking at a broader circle of acquaintances to include coworkers as well as friends and relatives, 30 percent of Americans are not mixing with others of a different race, the poll showed.

Respondent Kevin Shaw, 49, has experienced both integration and racial homogeny. He grew up in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, and attended a mixed high school where he was one of only two white teenagers on the mostly black football team. His wife, Bobbi, is Hispanic. They met in high school and have been married for 27 years.

Eleven years ago, they moved to a predominantly white neighborhood in the suburb of Liberty. "Soon after we moved in, my mother-in-law came to visit and a neighbor asked if she was my maid. It was just a matter of ignorance," he said.

In the time he has lived there the neighborhood has become less blinkered, helped by the arrival of younger families.

He also puts prevailing attitudes down to environment. "A lot of it comes down to where you grow up," he said.

As a group, Pacific states - including California, the most populous in the nation - are the most diverse when it comes to love and friendship. By contrast, the South has the lowest percentage of people with more than five acquaintances from races that don't reflect their own.

Some of this is down to precedent. "This country has a pretty long history of restriction on inter-racial contact and for whites and blacks, even though it's in the past, there are still echoes of this," said Ann Morning, an associate professor in the department of sociology at New York University.

"Hispanics and Asian Americans have traditionally had less strict lines about integrating."

In his comments two weeks ago, President Obama expressed optimism about the future, saying his daughters' experiences show younger generations have fewer issues with race. "It doesn't mean we're in a post-racial society. It doesn't mean that racism is eliminated. But...they're better than we are, they're better than we were, on these issues," he said.

Younger American adults appear to confirm this, according to the poll. About one third of Americans under the age of 30 who have a partner or spouse are in a relationship with someone of a different race, compared to one tenth of Americans over 30. And only one in 10 adults under 30 say no one among their families, friends or coworkers is of a different race, less than half the rate for Americans as a whole.

"My Mom's school, they had ended segregation, but she told me there was still basically one side of the road for whites and one side of the road for blacks," respondent Carlon Carter, 18, said.

A keen athlete and music fan, his racially diverse group of friends in Birmingham, Alabama, comes from these shared interests.

"There's a big difference now. We don't see each other so much like 'you're white and I'm black'. If you like the same thing I like, then that's all that matters," he said.

These results were taken from the ongoing Reuters/Ipsos online poll and include the responses of 4,170 Americans between July 24th and August 6th. The credibility interval, a measure of precision, for these results is plus or minus about 2.7 percentage points for a five-day average on any given day during that period. Smaller subsets of the poll, such as blacks, Hispanics and adults under 30, have a credibility interval for that period ranging from about 3 percentage points to 11 percentage points.

The race and ethnicity questions in this story are part a polling project that started in January 2012, surveying about 11,000 people a month since then. More information on the these questions and hundreds of others asked since the poll began can be found at polling.reuters.com/

Could this explain why the United States is so racially divided and seemingly unfriendly towards foreigners and immigrants...?

I don't have any friends. I am the ultimate loner because it is impossible for me to make a friend here in America. No one in America ever made an effort to become my friend. It's mostly because I don't fit into American culture and I am a more mature, refined, and noble individual. It's almost like I'm a positive-charged person, most other people around my age are negative-charged, and negative-charged people hate and exclude positive-charged people. Almost like it's wired into their subconscious.

here in the west coast, it's a different story. the east coast in general is way more closed than the west coast. and it proves my points, people of Hispanic ancestry in the US are more open minded than the other ethnicities, especially blacks.

yes, I have said it. I can care less if I have a backlash from the blacks in this forum. in my experience, blacks (i am not including african immigrants or blacks from latin american countries, just black-americans who descend from slaves) are the most racist assholes out there. sorry guys but it's the truth. i can care less if you guys have a problem with what I say. as winston said, this is a forum for free thinking and freedom of speech. i guess the trauma of racism has damaged their psyche.

this is mostly in the west coast. in the south, I would expect it from the anglos because of the past but I am primarily talking about here in the west coast.

I think that being in the Northeast has had a major impact on my life. The Northeast is the most closed region of the country (and the world) with a large amount of social isolation.

I just never fit in to America or the American culture. No one ever wanted to make an effort to become my friend and it's takes two to form a friendship. Breaking the ice is difficult and I am more of an introvert which means meeting new people in America isn't easy.

I can vouch for Tsar...The Northeast of the United States is very closed and isolated...

Also, being a guy in America means you have to be extroverted, really aggressive, and be able to break the ice when meeting people. I am introverted, I am more of a skillful Machiavellian in that I prefer to use tactfulness rather than aggression, and breaking the ice is difficult. I also have a very slight stutter similar to King George VI which many Americans my own age (college-age and around that age) so many people my age aren't interested in being my friend. I would say I am about a 7/10 or 8/10 by global attractiveness standards, I am intelligent, and I am a great person but that isn't enough to have friends in America. A person, especially in the Northeast and especially if they are college-age must be perfect and fit in to the culture if they want to have friends .

which is why I don't want to live there. In California at least, I can be with friendlier people, be with people of my kin (Mexicans), be near family, and be close to my ancestral homeland (west-central Mexico). but i talk about northern california. LA is a complete shithole that I would never live in.

As a black person, yeah some blacks can be ignorant and racist.

But hey, the blacks on HA won't treat you like that.

As a black person, I've made many hispanic friends here in Texas.

Making friends in college was easy for me. Problem is none of them were the popular guys who could give me access to parties, girls, and job opportunities.

Yeah what you say may be true..but let's not act like Latino groups in the U.S. are any better...a lot of them treat Americans in general like shit...refuse to speak English alienating Americans...they have this attitude that you are not shit unless you are Latino.. You have a lot of Latinos in the U.S. who are just as racist..and a lot of these Mestizos,Native, and White Latinos treat Afro Latinos in the countries they came from..like second class citizen..yet when they get to the U.S. they scream racism and demand the same rights as citizen even when in the U.S. illegally.

I'm not slandering what you're saying, but I must add: have you lived in Chicago or Atlanta? Chicanos and Mexicans don't want to be bothered with Blacks there. Especially now that the State of Illinois is awarding los indocumentados from Mexico driver's licenses, Chicanos' arrogance in Illinois is growing tenfold.

Here in Phoenix, a lot of Chicanos are a la John McCaine good-ol-boy network acting. A lot of them don't speak Spanish and Phoenix is only two hours away from Sonora province of Mexico!

The Brazilians in Philly and Boston metro are philistine for the most part.

Chicanos and Mexicans in the Chicagoland area are the same way. They run the City of Cicero and SW Chicago.

Dominicans in The Bronx and especially Washington Heights (a neighborhood in NYC) are that way, too.

Puerto Ricans in northern New Jersey, Philly, Orlando/Kissimmee/Ocala and probably New Haven/CT too - same way.

I don't know how Chicanos and Mexicans are in San Antonio, but I heard mixed reviews on if they shun Blacks away.

and on and on til the break of dawn.
