Cheerios Commercial Featuring Mixed Race Family Gets Racist Backlash

An adorable Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial couple and their daughter generated such a strong racist backlash on YouTube that the comments section had to be closed.

The ad had received more than 1,600 likes and more than 500 dislikes as of Thursday evening.


Prior to the closure, the comment section had been filled "with references to Nazis, 'troglodytes' and 'racial genocide,'" according to Adweek. YouTube comment sections have a reputation for breeding racist flame wars.

CNN focused on the issue earlier this year, after a panel addressing racism and race on YouTube was held at South By Southwest:


"Everyone gets hate comments on YouTube," said Andre Meadows, the creator of the Black Nerd Comedy channel. "You can make the most wonderful video in the world and you will get 'Fake!' and 'Gay!'"

But for minority creators, "when you get comments, it seems to be targeted toward race almost immediately. A lot of people get 'dumb video, stupid video' -- but with mine it immediately goes to racial slurs."


Commenters on the cereal's Facebook page also said they found the commercial "disgusting" and that it made them "want to vomit." Other hateful commenters expressed shock that a black father would stay with his

family. However, many took to Facebook to express their appreciation for Cheerios' decision to feature a mixed-race family.


"Having been mixed in the '70s, I'd like to thank everyone at Cheerios for making a commercial with an interracial couple! Going to buy boxes today! Many thanks for reflecting what my family looked like," Beschelle

Lockhart posted Monday.


"Just watched your commercial with the biracial family. Beautiful. Thank you so much," Alexandra Burt wrote. Cheerios was unfazed by the racist Internet backlash. "Consumers have responded positively to our new

Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all," Camille Gibson, Cheerios vice president of marketing, told Gawker.

My problem with the commercial isn't the interracial couple. It's the fact that Cheerios STILL tells us this lie that whole grains are healthy and "remove" cholesterol. First of all, whole grains are not healthy: they increase inflammation in the body and contains anti-nutrients. Secondly, cholesterol isn't something that needs to be removed; it is a substance necessary for life and when you remove cholesterol (through Statin drugs for example) bad things begin to happen to the body.

I eat six eggs every day (cooked sunny-side up and in LARD) and not only do I have only a 31-inch waist, my blood pressure and cholesterol readings are all very good. I also eat no bread whatsoever and avoid breakfast cereals, soda, and fruit juices (yes, fruit juices are garbage too; it's better to eat the whole fruit rather than drinking what amounts to concentrated sugar water.)

As far as I'm concerned Cheerios is guilty of a heinous crime: lying to people about what constitutes "heart-healthy food" and causing ever-increasing amounts of diabetes and heart disease as a result of this so-called "heart-healthy diet". Meanwhile real heart-healthy foods like eggs, lard, bacon, and red meat all get demonized.

Wanna know why obesity is so prevalent among the Native Americans whereas they used to be so skinny? Because they abandoned their traditional diets in favor of one high in bread and skim milk. People say it's cause they eat so much frybread but with frybread the main problem isn't the lard but rather the bread itself. As proof that lard is healthy and doesn't cause obesity or heart disease, look up Jan Kwasniewski's Optimal Diet, a diet which is based around using lard as a majority of calories. I follow this diet with only minor deviations and I'm healthier now at 28 than I was at 18 when I still ate a carb-based diet.

It would not surprise me if the foregoing group is also the primary source of the hateful comments. Still, judging by the amount of likes vs dislikes, this advertisement never should have warranted any controversy to begin with.

Indeed, as of right now, the ad has 20,720 likes and only 1,420 dislikes. In other words, a mere 7% hate the ad while a whopping 93% approve of the ad.

White nationalists and racialists remain a small, albeit vocal minority who are losing the battle against multiculturalism and a changing America. Their Jim Crow era worldview is outdated.

Since the number of interracial couples/marriages in the USA continues to increase, this ad accurately reflects the new America that is taking shape.

I disagree...America is still a vastly racist country filled with racists of all colors. And I get sick and tired of people pointing out how racist non-White countries like Asia, Africa, or Latin America are, when Western countries are just as bad, but more hypocritical about race than those places are...And I've always been treated better as an Asian American in Korea and Thailand than in the United States. How do you explain that?

I used to date a White girl in H.S.--and you should've seen the dirty looks and comments from both Black and White people, we had to endure. To be honest, I don't think multiculturalism is such a great thing--because all it does is divide and cause racial tension between different races living in a country, most of the time.

I can relate to your unfortunate experience. I am currently in Moscow right now with my Russian girlfriend. While we do receive some curious looks when we are out in public, the worst experience I ever had was back in the states. It happened when I dated an Indo-Guyanese girl (she was also mixed with Chinese and Portuguese) in NYC, of all places. We frequently received dirty looks on the subway and in public from people of Latin-American heritage, Indians, Arabs, blacks, etc. Interestingly, whites seemed to ignore us. Most of this hostility occurred in Queens; Manhattan and Brooklyn were far more tolerant and open-minded.

To be honest, I don't think multiculturalism is such a great thing--because all it does is divide and cause racial tension between different races living in a country, most of the time.

Let's make sure I understand you: are you suggesting that a society which has different “racesâ€￾ would have less racial tension if there were no multiculturalism? That seems to be the corollary of your statement above. Also, how would you define multiculturalism?

Also, if you don’t believe in multiculturalism, what are your views on those Western expats who venture into non-Western lands yet who fail to integrate into the local culture? For example, Westerners who relocate to Thailand without learning Thai? Or those who have lived in the Philippines for years without knowing any Tagalog?
