Why are East Indians hotel owners so miserly and stingy?

Post by Winston »

I have a question. Almost every motel I stay at is managed or staffed by East Indians. No one seems to know why. Not even the Indians themselves. Weird.

I've noticed that the older East Indians look very miserly, stingy, grumpy, unfriendly, uptight and strict. It's written on their faces and in their words/actions. They often have stiff lips and angry faces. Why is that? I thought East Indians were very spiritual and philosophical?

They seem anal about little things, and even put out inconsiderate stingy rules to try to save money. For instance, they offer continental breakfast, but only from 6am to 9am. Not all do this of course, but some do. Not everyone is going to get up that early, especially before 9am, to have breakfast. Why not extend it to 10am or 11am? Obviously, because they hope less people show up so they don't have to spend money on the pastries and cereal. lol. What cheapskates!

Wtf is wrong with them? Stinginess and miserliness seem written on their face and in their vibe too. They definitely aren't generous or free spirited. And their body language is very uptight too.

I've had it with them because this afternoon at a motel, when I was taking a nice shower, the shower steam went off into the room and set off the smoke alarm. It was very annoying and wouldn't stop going off. I was about to break the damn thing. It disturbed my peace, space and routine. Finally, after my shower, I called the desk lady. And an older East Indian lady came out and yelled at me. She took down the smoke alarm and said that the heater and shower steam must have triggered off the alarm.

In any case, she said I had to leave the motel and find another one, and that she would refund my money for the second night. I wanted to rest and not leave, since I was tired, so I argued with it about her. She threatened to call the police. What a psycho bitch!

It's not my fault that the shower set off the smoke alarm. Taking a shower is a normal thing and so is turning on the heater. She knew that, but wanted to kick me out anyway, saying that once the alarm goes off, there's no second chance. She said it wasn't my fault, so she's giving me my money back, but can't let me stay. She was very strict and stiff-lipped about it, and would not discuss it further. She also had a shitty temper too.

What kind of law is that? Either she is one nasty mean bitch, or California has some f***ed up laws.

This has never happened to me before in a motel. Maybe the room is small, so the shower steam triggers it easily? In any case, she said that this never happened to anyone before. Gee, what luck. Maybe it's my Charlie Brown luck again. She also got defensive and acted like they were not to blame for anything, and that this only happened to me.

I hate it when they get defensive and claim that every problem that happens is not their fault and that no one else has complained before. A lot of customer service people do that, especially if they are Indian. It seems that Indians don't like arguing or receiving criticism.

I plan to put up some negative reviews online about this motel for this. But it looks like they already have a lot of negative reviews online, but for other things.

Reviews for Padre Oaks Motel, Monterey, CA

At the Yelp reviews above, other guests claimed that the older Indian lady threatened to call the police on them too.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/padre-oaks-motel-monterey
VERY rude staff, threatened to call the police instead of calmly speaking to me about a small problem. Crazy lady! Stay elsewhere!!!
The most disappointing aspect of this place is the unprofessionalism. I read a previous review explaining that the hostess called the police on them due to noise without warning. Although I didn't have the police called upon me I did however received very similar short-sighted and unprovoked reaction involving the police.
...............
At this point she began raising her voice and yelling at me telling me to call the police. I calmly said I'm not accusing her of stealing I just wanted to know if she rented the place out. I said that the fact that she is becoming irate is not making this easier and also makes her look guilty. I just wanted to get my shirts back.

I never did call the police, but unfortunately, it seems very likely that the owners of this establishment stole my clothes (I even left the cleaning lady a decent tip). I will never, ever stay here again. Obviously, part of this is my fault for leaving the clothes in the closet, but the fact that I couldn't check the room on my own and that they became very, very uncooperative shows something is up with this place. My advice is to STAY AWAY.
Two bands rent rooms near each other. Another band comes by to hang out. Nothing crazy, a few beers and just talking with old friends. I went to my room to use the bathroom and when I knocked on our friend's door the hostess lady said she was calling the police! Nobody had given us a noise complaint or even asked us to keep it down! Friends bailed and everyone went to sleep. Cops showed up and kicked people out who were fast asleep! Our friend's wife went back to get a laptop and some other things that were left behind and was arrested! What kind of bigots run this place? Grow a pair and talk to us instead of running away and calling the cops. Everyone present was a mature and reasonable adult except the hosts and the police. And you know what? Still no laptop, so they are thieves, too. STAY AWAY!!!
Man what a psycho bitch! If she steals stuff, someone should arrest her!

Too bad this was the cheapest hotel in Monterey, CA, at only $34.99 a night. But they add some resort fees too, so the advertised rate isn't that honest.

Yeah, I don't like Indian Americans either! Many of them are nasty and racist too. They're worse than East Asians in their behavior.

The interesting thing is...the Indians in China (and other parts of Asia) seem much nicer and much more polite than the Indians 'back home,' in the good ole' USA or Canada. Why is that?

I'm guessing that the effects of Anglicization and Westernization has a very negative effect on Indians abroad. The Indians I met in the U.K. were also very cliquish, racist and closed-minded, too (similar to their American counterparts!). Many Brits despise South Asians and call them "Pakis" as a racial slur. Interestingly enough...South Asians in the U.K. commit a lot of crimes and frequently fight with the White British population--beating up Whites with games similar to the "Knockout Game" in the U.S.A. There's a lot or racial tension between racist White Brits and the South Asian/Muslim population. ...

There you have the reason (or one of many) why the motel is the cheapest in the area.

I've set off alarms due to steam from the shower. This isn't uncommon at all in hotels. You just need to make sure the fan is on (if they have one) and keep the bathroom door shut while you shower and for awhile afterwards.

Free Breakfasts are usually limited to the hours between 6am and 9am, regardless of price range or rating.

I never stay in a hotel with a bad rating. I don't fear lack of customer service as much as cleanliness. I worked at a hotel chain in Arizona AND Las Vegas for many years. I know the good, bad and ugly of that industry well. Indians usually do more than most other owners/managers of hotels do. They take the load in their shoulders instead of hiring employees to deal with it. That is why they can be short-tempered. I've never had a problem at any hotel and I've stayed at many. Perhaps it is because I've worked the industry and I am very easy to deal with. I'm patient because I've been in their shoes previously...

My take on it is that India is very communal. They went from a life surrounded by loving family, relatives and friends to one of isolation and lonliness in America. That has to take its tole on people. There have been a number of articles about it. Those who can't hack it, go back home.

Can you elaborate? What is an Indian merchant caste? And how do they get into the US? I thought only rich Indians could get into the US?

I'm in New Mexico now and I've noticed that the East Indians running motels here are different than the ones in California. They look more laid back and do not have that stiff uptight lip. They are not strict and uptight about rules and are willing to bend rules for me. This is especially the case with the ones in small towns.

But the Indian motel owners in California were very strict and uptight about the rules, and some are even crazy. Remember that one Indian lady in Monterey, CA that I told you all about who kicked me out of the motel for setting off the smoke alarm when I took a hot shower? She was really psycho.

I guess California is a really toxic and uptight place that brings out the worst in people. New Mexico is definitely more laid back and simple. It's not as efficient but it's not as strict either. California rules are very strict and anal. And so are its people and culture. California does not have a laid back vibe at all.

I used to travel for work and stayed at hotels M-F.

I'd suggest checking bed bug registries and read reviews prior to booking. Generally speaking I'd avoid the cheapest motels like the plague.

I'd also avoid the so called "continental breakfast" at lower end hotels. The stuff they serve at Holiday Inn Express is borderline and tastes like cardboard.

I'm Indian....I totally, completely 100% agree and understand....can you imagine I have to put up with these kinds for the last 37 years of life....Its below hell experiencing devolution living with these people :)

India is a caste based society....The merchant caste is called Bania...They are a business community, the traders from a particular region in India called Gujarat...Their surnames mostly end up as Patel...Most of them have immigrated to all parts of the world with their cunning, and stingy ways to make money....They are hated even in India as well...With their cunning, unmoral ways ...90% of billionaires, millionaires in India are from these caste...They will go to any length to squeeze that last cents from you...

Indians in general are very racist, opportunistic, close minded, credit grabbers, physically and mentally weak, abide by law, do not question authority, too religious, we lie a lot, corrupt...are not open to new ideas etc....5000 years of history and culture is all BS....its all created in the name of some gods or kings....All culture in India is one of slavery....

The highest caste in India is Brahman...those that are pure veg....There are some real good guys in India also but they are highly philosophical, and living in another dimension but their body occupying earth space but they meet you when they want...You won't be able to meet them in everyday life.....They decide if they want to meet another human being..They hold the power to whom they come in contact with because of their purity and sacrifice....

All these yoga that is exported to the west is the MOST EVIL...You should not meditate nor do yoga...because it is designed in such a way that...You will end up meeting the evil...

Now, there will be always exception and some will say....ohh no...my experience with Indians were different etc etc ...but it does not solve the problem of the one you end up meeting at a crucial point in time....Can you imagine the toxicity of America combined with the attitudes of Indians ....do you really want to deal with them ...  :D

Nowadays motels in the US are almost all the same. They are all clean with cable TV, fridge, microwave, wifi, etc. Even the cheap ones are. So no need to check reviews.

However, the Motel 6 chain sucks now. They removed the carpet on the floor to make cleaning the rooms with pets easier. The rooms are very small now and the shower is very narrow and barely holds one person. A better cheap motel chain is America's Best Value. It's the same price as Motel 6 but with bigger rooms and bathrooms and better quality soap and shampoo.

Yeah the continental breakfast is all sugar and carbs. Not healthy. But I never wake up on time for it anyway. lol.

Holiday Inn is expensive. They probably serve a hot breakfast. Its ok if you like carbs, cereal, pancakes, waffles and pastries.

Generally speaking business travelers need to be at their client's site by 8 or 9 AM, so the breakfast from 6am-9am is about right. But the breakfast sucks.

Holiday Inn Express is cheaper than the regular Holiday Inn hotels. They advertise their breakfast like this:
http://www.ihg.com/holidayinnexpress/ho ... kfast_More

But when you're actually there, it's like... salted cardboard.

The IHG membership points is a bonus, and my favorite hotel from their group is Hotel Indigo. Not the cheapest, but much, much nicer. Google "hotel indigo" and click on images. When I traveled for work and went to cities with a Hotel Indigo, I'd always try to book at room there.

yeah, try to read reviews at places before you stay there, especially sketchy places. One thing is that Indians usually have the cheapest prices though. However, the service you will get will suck because they have the cheapest price---

This is why i actually pay a few dollars extra and use Alamo when i rent a car-- i read too many horror stories in reviews.

Generally having spent time in so many places, i am not too picky, but some places are quite sketchy and almost borderline unsafe.

Beware that some of the cheapest hotels have long term occupants, drug dealers, short-term customers, etc.

Maybe because overseas East Indians face a lot of racism and become bitter, angry and racist as a result:

Here's another example of a super stingy Indian hotel owner, whose hotel and resort we stayed at in Subic Bay. Well actually he's Sri Lankan, but they look the same anyway.
