I dont buy it though.

Desire for children is not only physical lust. Sterile women desire children too.

I think its simpler.

1) Pill = screwing guys you're not sure you'd marry -- just to see if the frog turns into a prince
2) People who are screwing sometimes marry
3) Mismatched hookups blow up easily

Plus the fact that the notch count for women was rising steeply those same years, resulting in women who have more perspective, less all-in commitment, more of a judgemental attitude. "BOB always brought me flowers" etc.
