Wonder Woman and Feminism

Post by The_Adventurer »

The famous comic writer Grant Morrison isn't too happy with the portrayal of Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman and Superman: Dawn of Justice movie.

In today’s equalist society, many want role models for girls that prove they can be as strong as men. Though, of course, the flip side of that argument is that in doing so, you abandon all the qualities that make women unique, and these strengths are then shown as weaknesses in the eyes of society.

At least that was Wonder Woman creator William Marston’s argument in a 1943 American Scholar article.

“Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetype lacks force, strength, and power. Not wanting to be girls, they don’t want to be tender, submissive, peace-loving as good women are. Women’s strong qualities have become despised because of their weakness. The obvious remedy is to create a feminine character with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman.”
“Booty is so strong that there are dudes willing to blow themselves up for the highly unlikely possibility of booty in another dimension." -- Joe Rogan
