That of course includes their language and country too. A lot of times I am sitting or standing somewhere or just passing by and someone is handing out some promotional material or samples or whatever and every Asian face gets spoken to in Chinese but I get the privileged treatment of the English language without me having uttered a single word of it, no matter how good or bad their English might be...to me that's racism - even though it maybe of the reverse kind but that does not make any less unpleasant or tedious - specially when you are around it all the time. It actually makes me cringe.
I don't know if it is the size of the country (if one can call it that), their past invasions by the Japanese and the mainland Chinese nationalists and years of dictatorship, an inferiority complex, eagerness to impress the perceived Western foreigner (they treat the Southeast Asian foreigners abominably by ignoring some very basic work and living rights such a day off for years or months on end), to show off, to practice this language that they worship or is it some defense mechanism to exclude an alien face and culture or some mix of all of these?
A typical conversion with an irritated moi goes something like this:
Are you Taiwanese?
Yes.
Why do you speak English?
Nervous giggle followed by a meek apology for their poor English!
Is it because I started speaking English first and you thought this is your cue to do the same in order to put the visitor/guest in your country at ease?
No.
Is it because I asked you to speak in English?
No.
Is it because you think I want you to speak English to me?
No.
Is it because you think I am arrogant and expect everyone to speak my language, even though when I am in your country?
No.
Is it because Chinese is too difficult for foreigners to understand?
No.
Is it because you think I am stupid and can't understand Chinese anyway?
No.
Because you speak my language in your country but I don't know how to speak your language in your country, so you must be smart and I must be stupid!
No!
I live here...do you know how I can stop people speaking to me in English so I can learn Chinese and use it when I need it?
No.
Do you know how to speak Chinese?
Yes!
Why don't you?
Oh sorry! I will speak Chinese now!
And so on and so forth...man! life is hard with these retards!

When it comes to how stateside "campesiño" Mexicans and I deal with each other, this is EXACTLY what I was talking about.ryanx wrote:That of course includes their language and country too. Even some stateside "Boricua" Ricans do that sh*t to me sometimes, but they aren't as bad as stateside Mexicans.
I need to begin speaking Porto to stateside people, and see if what Stephen is saying is correct.
.....and what kind of response would the OP receive?momopi wrote:Try conversing in Taiwanese Hokkien and see what kind of response you receive.
