Paranoid fearmongering Americans comment about living abroad

Post by Repatriate »

I saw this yahoo news article talking about best places to retire. It's your usual crappy yahoo article but the comments were interesting:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/6-afforda ... 38246.html
I spent some time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and I wouldn't even think of returning. This article makes it sound glamorous, but I didn't think that at all. Yes, it is cheap living compared to the cost in the US. But it is very much a Muslim city. If you don't mind the shouting voice all over the city every day at Muslim prayer time, or feeling underdressed in the Equator heat if you are wearing shorts, then that might not bother you. I thought the city was dirty and very foreign. Yes, many people spoke English, but on the streets, you heard much Chinese, the Indian language and Malaysian. Outside of the home where I was staying, the sidewalks were cracked and broken and the area looked run down. I was in the areas where most ex-pats live, and that was nicer looking, mostly condominiums. I don't think it would be worth the cheaper cost of living to live in Kuala Lumpur.
The user's profile is of a fat white American woman of course. Oh no people don't speak english sometimes! and the sidewalk was cracked!
To the author: Do you not read the world newss??? Who in their right mind would want to move to these places? Let's see....the drugs, the cartels, the kidnappings, the extreme poverty of the native people, the floodings, the earthquakes, the poor infrastructure and utility management by the government, poor medical capabilities, not to mention that most Americans are hated in these countries mentioned in the article. And you have no rights in these countries. So, look sideways at someone, and your butt is slapped into jail, and since you have no rights, there is no 'one phone call', so you could be there for years before anyone found you, IF you survive. Nope....I don't see the attraction here. VERY POOR journalism.
Another hysterical American woman freaking out over every imaginary scenario in the book. I especially liked the persecution complex she has and doesn't realize that most people like Americans in these countries.
America may be stuggling, but compared to those places, I'll stay here, thanks.
I don't know who writes for Yahoo, but if you seriously think these places are nice to retire?
You are more senile than I am!
No Thanks I will stay in Cesspool America
Another ignorant comment.
Nice article...why not include Leavenworth and San Quentin, probably cheaper than Columbia and about equal in violence

I've read a lot of these "best place to retire" articles, but I've never read one that suggests retiring in the Philippines, thats probably the first place I would consider. Baguio, is inexpensive, 70F(20C) year round, pine forests, fresh produce all year and friendly people.

Quite a bit of silliness here. What most Americans might seek as a retirement destination is
far different that what might be a good "expat destination" I have spent years outside the USA
both in Latin America and Asia, and the places I have lived, the places I like, are very unlikely to
be retirement destinations, with Good reason.

I live in Mindanao. Is that a good retirement destination? For 99% of Americans, the Answer would be
a resounding NO! If you are not a seasoned expat, an average retiree in the Philippines would
be ripped off and swindled at every turn. Unless you are a seasoned international traveler,
the prospect of adapting to a new, and third world country in retirement would be a total fools errand.
I have seen hundreds of attempts, and almost ALL fail.

The moral of the story? Get where you want to be, long before retirement.
