Thank you for posting here. You among a myriad of others here of other creeds and ethnicities actually have a lot in common than one may know. When you put your Calvin-Candy-esque thoughts on pause, you actually make sense.

But I would like to tangibly answer your comment, do you think he gave up because the whole system would have eviscerated him from that school and that he may never teach again anywhere? ...alas the mantra "if you cannot beat, join 'em"?

I think the problem was that he is relatively powerless to do anything, and faced with that situation over and over you tend to become relatively passive as a defense mechanism. As a teacher I eventually learned ways to enforce some semblance of order, despite having no real power to do so, but perhaps this guy isn't capable of learning that or does not even have the latitude that I did.

That's so sad. That's why I condone upstanding homeschooling nowadays. Parent(-s) need to google and/bing and/or startpage for homeschooling materials in order to prepare these kids for the first day of their rest of their lives.
