I am a teacher, here in Seoul. I have lived here, on and off, since 2004. This needs to be said frankly and heard by Korean parents.
It is time to start teaching your children to respect each other and show basic manners when interacting with each other and their teachers. I am writing directly to parents who, if you are honest with yourselves, focus on one thing only, with regard to your kids: getting good test scores.
Everything else is far down the list of priorities. You push your kids so ridiculously hard, from shockingly young ages that basic social skills, manners and respect are completely forgotten. Get this straight, schools are not and cannot be responsible for teaching these behaviors.
Though you would like to pass the buck and put it all on the teachers, this does not work. Kids learn to behave from their parents. When kids throw trash on the floor of their classrooms and hallways, it is because parents are not teaching kids that their mess is theirs to clean up. When kids literally walk into each other and push each other aside to get where they're going, it is because they see their elders doing it.
When they pretend to show respect by bowing and saying "yes" to teachers then continue to do the same actions immediately after, this is due to poor parenting and a lack of true respect. Yes, I am telling you all that you are not parenting your children well. Get angry all you like. Call me names. Tell me I'm a foreigner and I should mind my own business. Sticks and stones. Look around you.
Are basic human courtesies being followed by those around you? Do people say "excuse me" when bumped into? Do you? Or do they check to see how old the other person is before deciding if they NEED to say something? Do people wait to talk to someone if they are in conversation already or just start speaking with no regard? Do you? Do people clean up after themselves or throw cigarettes and wrappers in trash bins? Do you? Besides the staff at Starbucks, does anyone speak respectfully to each other or even acknowledge each other? Do you? Speaking of coffee shops, do people use just one table in a crowded shop or take two, when one would suffice? Do you? Let's take it one step further. Do people EVER smile at someone they don't know or say "hi," or have a conversation? Do you? No? Why not?
Maybe it's because no one taught you that you live on this planet with other people who have a right to their space and their comfort as much as you do. We are humans and we thrive by being social and interacting positively with each other. Korean culture is drowning in a sea of rudeness and self-centeredness. Basic courtesies are necessary for the happiness of all and you have either forgotten or have never been taught this.
After you get over your ego and the anger at being told you are parenting poorly, take a breath and ask yourselves honestly: Are you teaching your kids basic respect for one another and common politeness? Would it take too much time and effort, before or after you stress them out over test scores, to instill some basic empathy and niceness? Would Korea be a happier place if you did?
Korea is going to shit for the same reason the West is. They are at about the same level of degeneration as the West was in the mid 80s (maybe late 80s now since I left). Poor parenting is no doubt a problem, but not the main one. With the situation in the schools, traditionally Korean teachers ruled with a rod of iron and literally beat the shit out of misbehaving students. Korean youngsters are well behaved and shy in small groups, but once you pass a critical mass in numbers, severe discipline is necessary. However, now with corporal punishment being abolished in the major cities, the infusion of Western non-violence crap, coupled with the recruitment of wimpy female teachers, the slide into anarchy is pretty much assured. There is a certain latent rude aggressiveness about Koreans, and the expectation that there needs to be authority figures visibly enforcing rules to keep them in line. Now that this is not happening, the results are not going to be pretty.
[~} I have met Koreans in the U.S.A. They are totally americanised. The only difference is that the females are still somewhat effeminate compared to the sick, disgusting creature called the Western female. However, Korean females are only 37% feminine now. Western females of course are 2% feminine {(this is not hyperbole ~ the modern Western female is NOT effeminate except for having a female name)}.
Each female 50 years ago can be viewed as ~ 80 to 100% feminine. The least feminine female one would see 50 years ago was about 80% effeminate and 20% masculine in her behaviour, thoughts, etc.
Currently ~
Chinese female ~ 25% feminine Indian female ~ 30% feminine Western female ~ 2% feminine Japanese/Korean/Philippine female ~ 37% feminine African female ~ Unknown Russian female ~ 30% feminine {(lot of their masculine behaviour comes from their obsession with exercise and wearing improper clothing. If they rectified these 2 points, Russian females would be 45% feminine. If they didn't drive and didn't ride scooters, this would increase their femininity to 68%.)} Islamic female outside the areas written below ~ 60% feminine Islamic female in Iraq/Afghanistan/parts of Pakistan/Syria ~ 80% feminine

Engage in jocularity all you wish. There's no point in discussing this topic further. I believe what I think is true and judge according to my experiences gotten from reading and travelling and seeing television and films. I'm not even born in U.S.A. so that automatically gives me insight into an entirely different Spanish culture that I was ensconced in and vigorously partook of.

When I was in Korea I met some ESL teachers that would say that the Korean kids are allot better behave compared to US kids..but I guess times changes or it's case by case. The biggest reason why some expats keeps staying in Korea is that I find for some of these expats they are alcoholics and or have major (I know I will offend) Asian fetish. Korea is known to be big drinkers and the working condition can be tough at times.
I agree with the foreign teacher even though I'm Korean American. Korean society has gone down-hill in recent decades, do to rampant Westernization and Zionist-Jewish infiltration of Korean culture through the entertainment industry.
It's a planned destruction of the country by the 'Elites'--just as the U.S. and Europe is being destroyed by racial violence, political corruption and mass Hispanic and Muslim immigration into the country.
I just hope that good Koreans can overtake the country one day, and overthrow the scum taking over the country--the way Putin is doing in Russia.
