I may quit my job after Labor Day

Post by Hero »

Enough is enough. I'm seriously considering quitting my job right after Labor Day.

Here's my plan for the next month: Just relax at work (because my boss is on vacation for most of the month). Then when my boss gets back and asks me what I've been doing all month, I'll just hand him my resignation letter.

By then, I should have about $190,000 saved up: $20,000 in cash and $170,000 in retirement savings.

After that, I'll get TEFL certified and get the hell out of here in the first quarter of 2017.

That is all.

That sounds like a good plan. I wish I could do the same thing.

Hero, what makes you think life would be that much better abroad? Not trying to be argumentative, just curious as I am in a similar position to yours. Would you mind drawing up a list of pros and cons, "life in the US" versus "life somewhere else".

Pros of living in the USA: Can make more money, better infrastructure, better selection of groceries
Pros of living abroad: Can date hot young women, friendlier people, more free time outside of work

But mainly, I'm just doing it for the women.

How old are you? Do you think you have enough to last working abroad and living abroad for retirement?

What if the US dollar loses 70% of it's purchasing power similar to the British Pound since 1992? Retirement Accounts are denominated in US Dollars.

And when you visited the Philippines, were the young women dateable? Were the people friendlier? Was this reality over there, or just your hopes and wishful thinking?

Yes, it was reality. I've been there twice. I know what I'm talking about.

I'm 48. I'll have to keep working for a living.

What if the dollar loses most of its purchasing power? What if my plane crashes on the way over there? What if the world comes to an end? You can't obsess over every terrible thing that might happen or you'll end up paralyzed. To me, the biggest risk is never taking one. If I don't make a major life change soon, then I'm facing another 20 years of this:
1. Get up
2. Go to work
3. Come home
4. Watch TV
5. Go to bed
6. Repeat steps 1-5 until dead.

Hero,

Which country are you going to head to? And what kind of work have you been doing?

I don't know which country yet, but I've heard that there are good opportunities for me in Argentina. The reason is that I've been working in corporate America for the past 8 years, so I could teach businessmen who want to work with American companies how to conduct business-related communications with Americans. My clientele would be able to pay me quite handsomely :D

Oh, I forgot to mention that I was a college professor for six years, so I have ample teaching experience as well.
