After spending a long time in the Philippines, I was now in the USA. Stopped my car at a traffic light.
Pedestrians were crossing the street while I was waiting.
As I was looking at them, I found myself suddenly smiling, and feeling happy and friendly towards them.
Suddenly, an urge welled up inside of me.
I could not help it.
" Amerikano! Amerikano! " I said. " Hi, Joe!"
One of the pedestrians gave me a weird look.
I caught myself on time, cleared my throat, the light turned green, and I drove on.
Similar urges would come up after coming back from Japan or Thailand. I'd sit somewhere and watch people walk by. Then suddenly I find myself mutter,
" Farang farang, farang, farang, faraaaaaang!" Or, " Gaijin da, gaijin da!"
Greeting Americans in America.
Greeting Americans in America.
A brain is a terrible thing to wash!
