I strongly doubt that even the early Romans were "very White". They most likely had a phenotype similar to modern Mediterraneans and looked significantly different from Northern Europeans.

Almost all European ethnic groups descend from a mixture of three distinct prehistoric ancestral populations: Western Hunter Gatherers, Anatolian Neolithic Farmers, and Yamnaya steppe nomads.
